ive read about dr popper

comments and comparisons welcome
i also read that some wasnt sure if the dr popper is legal
does anyone know??

Never tried the popper, but have tried many others. Hands down, my jacoby jumps best for me. It can jump high for short hops(I only need about a balls clearance) or clean over the whole table if you want it to.

I had a bunjee jumper, worked great. heavy, so close jumps were difficult. now ive purchased the Lomax jumper, its light, and can jump really close, but due to light weight, it requires a better stroke to jump...more error prone. it jumps great, but you gotta get it right. With the cheapo Bunjee, you almost couldnt mess it up...but close quarters jumping was out of question. If I prctice 5 jumps with the Lomax, I can effortlessly jump aything...but when I pull it out of the case in a match with no practice, I miscue sometimes. Miscues were rare with my cheapo Bunjee.

I have a Hanshew custom on order, I will let you know in about a week or two how it does.

So far, practice seems to be the answer, but I dont have time to devote to practice, so im hoping for the miracle pill jumper :-)

Jumper

Best combo I've ever tried it is a purpleheart shaft with a white diamond tip. I also have a narrower shaft maybe 11.75 with G8 tip much lighter but jumps really close. Tried the Poison without much luck so I went custom, glad I did.

Awesome jumper. I have jumped a ball from about an 1/8 inch apart. Online they jump a coke bottle from right beside it. Jumping from a 1/4 inch away is routine when you get it right. It takes a very hard dart stroke.

It is not legal for one reason. At the end of the ferrule/tip the shaft narrows and then widens out. It is illegal for a cue to narrow along it's length from tip to butt. There is no minimum weight, Popper is 4 oz and the length is okay at 40 inches.

Unless you're attempting to draw on every jump, you literally don't even need to chalk the tip. Phenolic or not.

Unless you're trying to do trick shots, jumping a ball that's closer than a balls width away is the wrong shot anyways. Now to choose a jump cue that's capable of jumping at least a balls width gap is fairly easy as I haven't found one jump cue that can't do that. Hesitent about spending lots of money on a jump cue? Buy a J&J jump cue, cheapest out there, with great performance. But really any jump cue that has a hard ferrule and a hard tip will jump well.

It's your choice on how much you want to spend, but there's no real wrong choice to purchase. Just learn to jump properly to begin with and then decide what you want out of a jump cue.

Under what rule set is it illegal for a cue to narrow then widen out from tip/butt??

BCAPL rules only have the following for equipment:

9. Cues
a. The width of the cue tip must not exceed 14 millimeters. There is no
minimum width.
b. The weight of the cue must not exceed 25 ounces. There is no minimum
weight.
c. The length of the cue must be at least 40 inches. There is no maximum
length.
d. The cue tip must be composed of leather, fibrous, or pliable material.

If the taper aspect was an issue then the Pechauer jump, the Mezz Air Drive, and any cue with a "dart stroke" grip are also illegal. Which is not the case. (BCAPL rules again)

Two jump break cues come to mind: the Lightning Bolt (6.5 oz / 12 oz) and The Jester (4 oz / 14 oz). I've never tried The Jester, but I own a Lightning Bolt. I can clear a full ball with an inch gap when I put a good stroke on it and the cue is probably capable of better. Dominic Esposito markets The Jester, he can clear a full ball much closer than an inch, maybe 1/4" with it.

With those suggestions made, I want to agree with Hits 'em Hard; unless you got to a point where you could pull those shots off close to 100% of the time, you're not trying to pull them off in a game situation. Just about anything you buy will suffice if you've got a good stroke and a full ball clearance. It really comes down to practice. If you're just looking to jump balls really close without using what looks like a gimmick cue, one of the two listed above would be the way to go, IMHO.

You can't beat the Alex Brick Jump/Break Combo.
Made of Diamondwood, Rock-solid, and you will be
"jumping" with confidence in short order.

I vote for predator air 1st because the lightness of the cue and mezz airshooter (1st gen) as the 2nd. For extremely close jump, I think the Dr. Popper has it, but I just watch it on the video, not by testing it myself. I think, Dr. Popper cue are not made for regular jump which in case we always have to face in a match, and it have a small diameter shaft (except the tip). The predator air is became my favourite for close jump (1 ball away), but when it goes to long jump and pendulum stroke, I think mezz airshooter has the accuracy and control over the predator imho.

Close jumping the Dr. Popper or Pred Air both perform well... I didn't care for the Jester at all but the lightning bolt mentioned sounds like it weighs in about right for jumping close....

I think you have to carry 2 jump cues if you are going to get the most out of your jump play...

I have a custom from Bill Gibbs out of Crossville and I can clear a full ball 90% plus as long as I have at least a 1/4 inch...

That cue is a specialty close jumper... If you use it properly it can have devastating effects.. I almost never am jumping to make a ball if I have it out......

I've tried the Dr. Popper, Jester G5, and the Robin Dodson "Frog" (not the "Tadpole"). All of these jump very well at short distances, but the Dr. Popper is better at 1 CB width or less. As stated above, it's not so good at longer distances. A friend has a Mezz AirDrive and tends to do rather well with short and long jumps, but at $300+, I can't justify the cost. As I do better at kicking, I tend to not jump as often as some. That being said, I use a $50 Cuetec jump cue. The balance feels right for me and shaping the tip has allowed me better control. I can use the pendulum and dart stroke with relative ease and be as accurate as I can with any other. My advice would be to test drive as many as you can and see what works best for you.
