Best Masse Shot in an Actual Game....

8-ball tournament last week

first game. my opponent breaks and runs out to the black. misses.

I step up. i'm not consistent enough to run out too often and i've got a nasty cluster. i break it up with a safety shot that has him in a nasty nasty snooker. He masse's out of it, about 3/4 the length of the table, strikes the black and knocks it 2 feet into the pocket he called.... i went home.

if i had footage of it... i'd burn it...

lucky hit'n'hope soab

Nice shot, although I wouldn't really call it a masse with the way he applied the spin.

Interesting comment. What would your definition of Masse be then ?

Or what didn't he do to qualify the shot as a Masse ? Commentators certainly thought it fit the bill.

Is it more of a Pique (sp ?) shot ?

Masse shot is a shot made or played by Mike Massey !!!

That is what I think about this !!!

The best I've seen was the finals in a Southern Billiard Tour in 2010 and it was hill hill and was streamed. I wonder if they still keep the video that far back?

A few define it as any shot where you jack up the cue nearly vertically but IMO
when most people say masse they mean where the shooter jacks up and then curves the cue ball
around a blocker to hit another ball. Lee just jacked up and whacked the ball sitting near his CB.
Corey hit a very nice draw stroke.

I was hoping to find a good example but I can't, probably because everyone just jumps instead these days.

But this was a very nice 'trick shot' that torbjorn found a practical use for, in this 3C match:

For some reason I have developed a great masse touch. I find it funny when I watch others try to masse the cue ball with extreme straight down trick shot masse. Basically I jack up like I am going to hit a jump shot, hit the cue off center and get the ball to squib I barely even touch the felt with the cue stick and it works wonders

My Masse

This is one I pulled off a few yrs back. Sorry no video and really really sorry for the horrible drawing  I was playing scotch doubles, and my partner hooked me on the 8 behind the oponent's ball. 8 ball was frozen to the rail. I came around the blue ball and cut the 8 down the rail. Maybe this one was more luck then skill, but either way, our oponent's jaws dropped!.

Some of you need to learn the difference in a masse shot, and a power draw shot. Yes he used a masse stroke but not for the purpose of clearing an object ball.

Normally a masse' is when the cb is shot past an obtruding ball, and then takes a sharp curve to get to it's destination. In this case, Lee did not want to foul due to the closeness of the cb and ob. To avoid the foul, he jacked up and used extreme draw. The cb hit the 6, then caromed off it to the rail, bounced off the rail, and then the draw "took" and curved the cb back up table.

So, this would actually be a draw shot, not a masse' shot.

Exactly. And actually the only masse vid posted in this thread is post #2.

A fine discussion gents, but I don't necessarily agree with those who said it is not a masse shot for the reasons they have stated.

Most of the definitions I can find definitely define a masse shot as using an elevated cue, which he certainly did.

Many definitions also suggest the aim of the shot is to "swerve around an intervening ball" , but I don't think that this is absolutely necessary for a stroke to qualify as a masse. For example, many of the magnificant masse shots used in 3c billiards have the cue ball close to an object ball, and the idea of the shot is to impart spin on the cue ball using an elevated cue, not to swerve around a ball. People don't call these shots "draw" shots.

Jury still out on this one for me....... ;)

I don't agree Lee "Just jacked up and wacked the ball" at all. I think the footage / commentry could be edited. They spend a fair bit of time showing footage before the shot while he dithers as to what to do, but I also believe they have edited out some time as well. Even the commentary doesen't seem to fit what he is doing, as they say he is "Forced to Masse" rather quickly for mine. But that's just my suspicion, and doesn't alter the topic of discussion.

And while I agree Cory hit a nice stroke, its not that hard a stroke on that equipment. The real concern is that its been posted in this thread as a masse shot...
