Hi everyone, I just started playing pool and I want to get better. What is the best basic practice strategy to get better? I can make the balls sometimes, but sometimes I miss it really bad.

truthfully from me to you.. keep shooting... shoot in the morning, shoot in the evening, shoot every moment you can.....

there is a ton of knowledge out there take lessons when available listen to the advice of those better at the game than you .. filter the good stuff from the bullsh*t..

listen to it all.. take what works for you and scrap the rest..

but more importantly than anything else.. keep shooting, and shooting, and shooting.

the thing that separates the great pool minds from the great pool players is the players just keep shooting...

devote a portion of your life to becoming good at pool...

if you don't

you won't

and that is the simple truth.

You might find the early NV clips here useful:

Highly recommend that you look at this site, repeatedly.....
There is enough information in the NV clips to keep you busy for a year.
I found them to be extremely helpful.
Get the fundamentals down, stance, grip, stroke, and aim, then build on them until they are an unconscious part of your game. Once you are at that point you can start thinking about strategy, position play, and the finer points of the game.

I'll say it again for emphasis... VISIT DR DAVE'S WEBSITE  :bow-down: :thumbup2: :thumbup2:

Thanks everyone for all the advice so far. I don't know what I'm going to do yet, but all of your information will point me in the right direction.

Play the ghost to help your break. Power strokes take awhile to develop. Use a long bridge. Take ball in hand on each shot and don't play position. If you can run out, do the same thing and play position for the next shot. Take ball in hand when you don't get a good shot on the next ball.

Take Lenny's advice, and learn to stop and draw your cueball on those shots too.

Never look at the contact point on the object ball unless the shot is straight in. Learn to visualize the ghost ball and look where your cue tip is going.

you should quit and play poker instead. this game'll cost you hours a day for years of your life to realize that even if you get as good as you can be there's someone out there that'll make your accomplishments look like a joke. and if you're that guy then you'll realize that even with all your skill and tallent you could make more cash being an accountant

thats funny that you should say that.I was just thinkin the same thing the other day. Ive been living on my 9 footer and playing till i cant lift my arms. But I still go out and cant beat the local shortstops. and the funny thing is that those guys beating me would still be dismanteld by a pro. So i think to myself. Why do i keep doing this. the only asnwer is that i love the game.

Get a coach or instructor. It'll cut off months (if not years) of your learning curve and you won't develop bad habits that will hurt your long term pool game.

Besides, it's 2008 and it's not required to learn pool from the school of hard knocks. There are plenty of people that will help you get better.
