Best Set to prove winner ?

We were have a little discussion while playing the other night. Basically the debate was over the best type of set to prove a better player. Some thought a long race , some thought an ahead set , some thought maybe a combination of those or the addition of a time limit.

Some ideas thrown around were that races added the pressure of running out of games , ahead sets added time to allow 'rolls' and such to even out as well as stamina. Of course money got thrown in there as well. How do you cover all the bases and apply the correct amount of pressure to really seperate a pair of arguably similar players.

Wadda think ?

The best way to decide who a better player is would be to play a set a day for a set number of days - say best of 15 days. The problem with these marathon ahead matches is that all it does is prove who can stay awake longer.

depending on the caliber of players we are talking about i agree with justin powell, if we are talking about two champions/very respected top players of their area they SHOULD play every game and at least play it decently so in that case i have always thought that playing 3 sets of multiple games usually 8 ball 9 ball and one pocket or 10 ball, but if you are talking about lower caliber the money probably wont be very high and in my honest opinion they could play 1000 sets and it would probably come out different every time unless one of them really rattles under any pressure with any amount of money would be the only deciding factor in which he/she should know better than to gamble anyway, one of our top players in my area can beat almost anybody for 10 to 40 a set, any more than that or if he gets down more than about 40 50 bucks or have the ablility to slam him with safes for the first set and he falls apart and can only run a couple balls at a time because he thinks about the money and the pressure too much

if you wanted to do it to determine THE best...

you would take the top 10 pro's of any given year...

and go old school...

round robins where everyone plays everyone ... in each of several different disciplines... seed them in a tournament based on performance in the round robin...

and play single elimination.. until one guy is left standing..

that man would be THE best

Nine-ball or ten ball. A race to one hundred played over three days should prove who's the better player. You could also throw in the winner has to win by five or more games. I'd also like to see a urine test every day to make sure neither or both players are playing with the same fuel in their tanks.

Oh no you don't tom! Next thing you know the players are going to be in front of the supreme court pleading the 5th like ol' Mark Mcguire lmao.

Pool is in the pills! You have to know that.

Have two guys play for it all: cash, cues, cars - loser leaves flat busted. You will find out who the better player is. Without that kind of pressure you will not know for sure unless one is absolutely dominant.

That point aside follow the following steps:

1. You need to determine if you mean in one game or as a player in general. Obviously, multiple disciplines is better if you mean overall (include games neither have played carom, snooker, etc).
2. Vary the tables used. This will help to level the playing field.
3. Play on multiple days. One player will have better days and one worse. This must be taken into account.
4. Play in locations where neither player is comfortable.

There are other things I could add, but I will not divulge them since that is part of why I feel I have an advantage handicapping matches.
