Best shaft cleaner???

You won't find anything better than the Magic Eraser. For $2 you get two of them - it should last you a while - and it will clean you shafts to where they look as good as new.

I respect your brain and am asking you to research this out please!

Alcohol or water which one will not harm shaft!

Alcohol on a predator (laminated glued together style shaft) scares me am I wrong ?

It dissolved permanent marker graffiti using magic eraser and water easily!

You are the best!

i use alcohol on a predator shaft 2-3 times a week and never ever had a problem.
water will raise the grain.

I dont recommend using water. Water will make your shaft wrap or delaminate your shaft.
People say this all the time, but the only two shafts I have that warped were cheap to begin with. A Meucci Maxima and a SP bar stick. And both warped while nicely tucked away in their cases, hardly ever used.

I have used soaking wet towels on my expensive cues, at times. As well Q-Clean, low percentage ISO, high percentage ISO, denatured alcholol, Zippo Lighter Fluid. All of it. For years. I defy anyone to find any damage on these cues.

I'm just wondering exactly what kind of damage other people have truly seen with using water, bleach, or alcohol on their shafts.

Blackjack, would you have to mix anything w/ the Magic Eraser or just use it right out the bottle? Thanx for the tip......

I have used the Magic eraser by getting it damp with a small amount of water... not soaked... I have used alcohol... I have also used SlipStic Shaft Cleaner. I have never had any problems using this product on a Predator, McDermott, Pechauer, or OB-1 shaft, and I have been using it for a while now.

ME will work OK with alcohol, or mineral spirits, but is most effective when dampened with water, due to the material composition of the sponge. Below is an old post of mine showing before and after of a used cue I bought that was impregnated with godawful red chalk. If this won't make you a believer, nothing will. Be prepared for your shaft to feel rough after a good cleaning, because all the garbage will be removed from the pores. I sand with 4000 then 8000 paper, but a good burnishing with leather or rough paper from a shopping bag works also. BTW, I use water, then wipe down with 90% alcohol to evaporate any residual moisture. Never had a warping issue yet.

You guy's are using the wrong alchol try usuing 100% denatured alchol it will have no water in it so you dont have to sand just reburnish with leather then seal it with wax and your ready to go again.

Try it with the Mr Clean works great or with Bon-ami or bartenders delight both are a ultra fine grit for stainless steel sinks ...
With ajax or comet it leaves a stinky shaft and it a coarser grit you will have to repolish\burnish it on a lathe if you use the coarser cleaner or anything with a water base to it ..thats why most dont uses it on shafts. It opens the pores to much and swells the wood You will go through more shafts with the coarser approach especialy if you use any sandpaper on your shafts.

For the every few days cleaning, I use a little bit of 99% ISO alcohol that i picked up at the drug store on a paper towel. Doesn't raise the grain at all (but dries the crap out of your hands). No burnishing required.

For the once in a while deep cleaning ((every few months), I use mr clean magic eraser with alcohol and then polish with 2000, 4000 & 8000 abrasive while spinning the shaft on a drill.

No waxes or anything like that.

Copied and pasted from the Predator website:

SHAFT MAINTENANCE: To clean a Predator shaft, use a towel slightly dampened with rubbing alcohol. To avoid damaging your Predator shaft do not sand it, no abrasive is necessary. Use a leather burnisher or similar material to seal the shaft after cleaning. Do not expose the shaft to excessive moisture and do not steam it to remove dings.

They use a water based adhesive to glue the laminated sections together so that's probably why water is not recommended.

A little rubbing alcohol on a magic eraser is the best combo I've found.

The cool thing about magic eraser is that it doesn't use chemicals or abrasives to remove the dirt. The foam breaks down into microscopic cups that scoop the grime off and carry it away without any damage to the surface. The alchohol (you only need a little) really is only needed to help flush the grime out of the pores. By itself dry, the magic eraser works pretty darn good, but the two together work amazingly well. Lightly wipe off with a microfiber towel if you have one, or a paper towel, just to get any loose stuff off, and then I'll lightly burnish with a wrinkled up clean piece of printer paper. I'll then add a little Slipstic and I'm good for another couple months.

All this I owe to AZ! :D

I've been doing cue repairs for years and Magic Eraser is one of the best products i've found to clean a shaft! It works....

I bought a package of alcohol swabs like they use before you get a shot. Take 3 or 4 bar napkins, fold them in half, place one swab in the middle, and wipe the shaft down with rapid motions. Then turn the napkins over a using firm pressure, burnish until you feel significant heat. Clean, burnished, and no raised grain. I do this about once every two weeks or so. In between I wipe down the shaft with a cloth to remove extra chalk at the end of each nights shooting.

has anyone here tried the slipstic cleaning stuff? i'd like some reviews on that please =)

Not out rain on anybodies parade, but here's a site that has some interesting info on 'ME' type products. Always thought there might be a problem if you happened to get some of those particles in your eyes. Just don't use them to cleanse body parts and you should be fine:eek:

Do you know of any similar product to the ME, that works the same way? I've never found any store in my country that sells ME and ordering all the way from the states seem a little overkill.

Vileda Miraclean looks like working the same way?

Magic Eraser is "melamine foam", I saw it available on the net from asian sources long before Magic Eraser was around. From doing some poking around on the net, I'd say that Vileda Miraclean looks like it is the same thing.

I swiped this text from a pdf I found on another site:
MIRACLEAN
Vileda’s Miraclean is a no.1 trouble shooter
For annoying and stubborn marks, made
from melamine resin foam
, just add water!
Ideal for removing light scuff marks are
insects from the front of cars.
