Sorry didnt know what area to post this in. I been playing pool in leagues for a little over 2yrs now and always just bought a cue online and used the shaft that came with it well now that im starting to understand the performance aspects of having the right shaft and tip can do for you I was wondering what everyone's opinion on the best shaft would be. I'm leaning towards a OB1 anyone have any experience with this shaft or can tell me of something better please do? I searched for a thread with a review of the OB and couldnt find it...Sorry

OB-1 Shafts

OB-1 shafts are great. You can learn a lot about your stroke when playing with one. I think it's a good shaft to have in your case. Very reasonable price compared to all the other shafts on the market. Pick one up, can't go wrong. Just my opinion.

Custom shafts... I would rate Eric Crisp (Sugartree Cues) the #1... Also in the pack you have Searing and Szamboti with no disrespect for all the other cuemakers, those are my favorites. Also if you get on the good side of Laurie from SW, they have some really special dense shaft wood hidden in the close.
Production shafts my favorites are Mezz and Tiger for quality, feel and low deflection.

if your going to go with a LD shaft i would pick tiger, for the price and quality.

but you cant go wrong with a nice custom shaft. i used to be a LD guy and play with OB and predator and tiger but once i go my hands on a couple nice custom cue shafts it was all over lol

Occassionally I need to have a shaft made for a cue. Rick Howard seems to get some excellent shaftwood but it isnt snow white. It isnt a big deal for me, but some insist on snow white shafts and these aint.

I probably have had at least 5-10 shafts made by Rick.

Perfect every time.

I like the tiger shafts a lot, they have a great feel and taper. However, they are not LD, they deflect like a normal shaft.

If you're looking for a low deflection shaft both Predator 314-2 and the OB-1 do what they claim...very little squirt. I also agree that the Tiger X is not a low deflection shaft. While I'm currently playing a 314-2 (on a Pechauer butt), the 314-2 or the OB-1 just don't have the very satifying "hit" of a premium conventional shaft. But the feel comes at a price...more deflection.

I like the shaft that came with my cue. I've always been a believer in using the shaft that the cuemaker intended to be used with the cue.

Do have old joss shaft that I switch between butts when I have a joss or schon butt.

As you can see from the replies so far is that no one can agree on anything. Someones going to say Sugartree someone else is going to say Omen someone else will say Hercek and so on till the end of time. Remember you looking for a shaft thats best for you not whats best for someone else. I had a Capone that I loved before I started making my own cues. Best of luck

The best shaft I've ever played is made of hornbeam by Dmitry Mart'yanov. Another great shafts were made by Dmitry Komarov aka DBK here in AZ.
Personally I think, hornbeam is the best wood to make shafts.

like what?

I've played with low deflection shafts for most of my life, then I heard about shafts made from old bowling alley wood.I got a Jim Pierce cue I bought from Tommy1351 with 2 bowing alley shafts about 40 years old. This wood is so dense and dark and has alot of grain lines (some people don't like that)but a ton of growth rings. These shafts are in a league of there own.As far as I know he has about 60 blanks left of this wood then it's gone. You'll throw every shaft you own in a firepit when you try one of these. Not saying its the perfect shaft but damn near close!

If you want to learn easily, get an ld shaft(ob, predator), if you want to learn old school, get a custom makers shaft. because the wood is pretty much gonna be good.

I heard all those tales about bowling alley shafts a long time ago. About 5 years ago I had the opportunity to buy an _old_ bowling lane with the thought of shaftwood, but frankly it looks like more work to use than it could be worth. I'll probably make work benches out of it someday unless someone talks me out of it first.

bowling alley is very stable... even cross grained doesn't warp:wink:

Are you going to sell it? PM some pictures and your price...
