Best Shot to Gauge Skill

Full disclosure, this is a direct copy of a post from @BasementDweller

I thought it would make a good thread to talk about.

If I had a room full of players and I had to separate them by skill level and the only information I got came from observing them all shoot one shot of my choice, what shot would I choose? I wouldn't pick an intricate positional route, instead I'd probably just lineup a long straight in shot and tell them to draw it back into the corner pocket. How they cued it would tell me all I needed to know.

What shot would be most telling?

I have actually gauged player skill simply by how they walked up to the table and put the balls down on it LOL

Aside from the long straight draw shot I would pick an inside spin 3 rail position shot.

Can’t speak for anyone else, but I didn’t respond because a) your camera angle sucked on the setup 😂, and b) a trick shot with a “secret setup” doesn’t seem like a great test of skill.
Can't take some of you anywhere.....SMH.....Fun Blocker!!!......You were supposed say you know without saying you know....Guess I can't have any fun around here.......LOL....no worries...:)

I "expected" you (and others) to know but (hoped) you would play along....Oh well.......I am fairly positive there was (or would have been) people setting up the shot trying to figure out how to make it

I have done that shot and was trying to give away the secret and had people that never caught on....Every time before the shot I was going to make it I would stop and more and more obviously say..."Dang these balls are dirty".....they still did not catch on.

Anyway....It actually is a shot that is information gathering about someone.....If someone like you jumped on the secret...I can say...Ok this guy has been around the block and has some knowledge and probably knows how to move.....That gives me info to know that perhaps maybe I want to stay away from strategy games with you...or at least be careful in my negotiations for weight.

There are guys/girls that all they play is 9-ball and can hit crazy hard shots and have big strokes....but don't have a clue how to play 8-ball, 1-pocket, Golf (on a snooker table) etc....but there is also guys that can't really play a lick of 9-ball that will crush you all day at 1-pocket.

I am not Earl, Efren or anywhere close to that level......So I need to be a better negotiator and/or make sure I don't get myself into bad games.......Hitting (any) 1 shot is not going to tell me enough about a players "skill" level.....But a few different methods can extrapolate the information I need to give myself a better advantage of not getting hustled by guys like you....;)

Sorry I spoiled it. I’ll edit my answer to warn folks about that.

If I was playing someone who set that up and asked me to shoot it, I'd have his # b4 he finished setting it up and miss it on purpose if I could. Trick shots aren't a very good judge of skill level. Any noob w enuf practice and time on their hands can execute tricks shots.🤣

How many Spot shots out of 10?
With the half-ball hit…no problem…try something else…
you dont think accuracy and consistency is not a measure to gauge some's skill?
a 400 fargo will not make as many as a 500
a 500 fargo will not make as many as a 600
as you get past 650 the scores would be closer i would guess but so is the level of play
jmho

Must shoot cue ball from the kitchen, cue ball completely behind the line Put the object ball on the spot, if you shoot from the right side , make the ball in the left bottom corner and make the cueball in the left side pocket going off the bottom rail after contacting the ball on spot.

No masse"! I repeat , NO Masse" , no illegal shots, just a great stroke. If you hit anywhere below the side pocket on that rail , you made an awesome shot, making it in the side , gets extra points for accuracy.

That shot can't be made by just anyone. Heck, I might have to tune up and pop a couple B4 I could crank one out!!😂
All of the inside juice shots requiring a comeback angle that extreme would be excellent indicators!! Good post guy!!👍🏻

Middle diamond on the head rail shooting a spot shot with inside English, playing to lag within 6” of where you shot from.

Anyone who can make that 2 or more times out of 10 can play.

… edit: on dirty equipment.

You make that shot 3x in a row, The answer will be, ‘no, we can’t play a little.’

BU Exam III - Advanced Shots has 25 challenging shots to test players at a high level. All 25 are demoed here:

And examples of pros executing many of the shots can be found here.

All amazing shots . I remember when I learned shot 21. I started using it about 4 times a game, lol, after I lost some of my hard earned money with it, and pulled back a bit, but it's a great shot to have in your arsenal.
Thanks Daktari !

How well you can execute a long draw shot also has a lot to do with the table, the cloth, and the atmospheric conditions. I do think that it's the best single shot way to make a rough determination of a player's basic skill level, but I do think you have to adjust for the conditions before jumping to conclusions.

As a lesser player, a slightly easier "one shot" test is one I use every day on my 8' Brunswick Medalist as a warmup tool. I put the 9 ball about an inch off the rail behind the head string, center of the table, and put the cue ball directly in front of it, aligned with the first diamond across. I then put the 8 ball one diamond past the side pocket, about an inch off the rail, and then try to pocket the 8 and draw back off the rail for position on the 9. (If I miss the 9 I don't count it.) When I can do this several times in a row with the 8 ball alternating between both sides of the table, I'm satisfied that my stroke is at least locked in for the moment. I've got shimmed pockets that make it a bit harder, but my cloth is so filthy (I'm lazy) that drawing straight back without the use of a rail is MUCH harder, and if I try it from more that about 4 or 5 ft. away, it only leads to frustration. I'm lucky to execute that shot on this table 20% of the time.

I would need a Philadelphia lawyer to figure how to set this up...

...
This used to be a favorite shot of mine. Haven't played it in a long time. Here are eight tries. I like to try to make a ball in the side. (There is some cursing in the background.)

I played in a pool league that estimated the handicaps of new players by having them shoot a series of shots. One of the shots was similar to Kinister’s shot #1. This system worked good until the new players started sandbagging the test.

Bert’s shot #1 is a good gauge the skill for beginning and intermediate level players
