Best Tip for Break Cue

Odega

Try an ODEGA break tip, leather...hard as a frickin rock, and holds chalk well...I promise you, you will love it :-)

I had one of those hard tip and found out that..........

Each year there seems to be another great break tip coming out. For those of you who keep up with it would you mind suggesting your favorite tip for a break cue.

My old hard, layered tip that I had Predator install on my BK2 finally disintegrated. I was practicing with the BreakRak and hitting them about as hard as I could when most of the layers went flying. It was old and had a chip missing out of it and well, it was time..

Now I'm looking for the next BEST BREAK CUE tip.

Thanks,

I like to kind of feel the tip grab the ball. With a really hard tip it just seems to fly here and there.

I live a firm tip but one that will give me a little grip on the cue ball.

Especially on the bar table.....

Hmmmmmm..........

I like the samsara.
I really like madman break tips though.
Phenolic tips are good and G-10 tips are good too.
On my break cues I put a madman on though.

+1 for Madman break tips, but for a different purpose -- on break/jump cues. I have a Madman on my George Phillips custom jump cue (6 ounce -- weighs the same as a cue ball) and I can do some crazy things with that tip.

On my breaker (Orange Crusher), I have the stock Samsara.

If the Samsara ever wears out, or if I ever get into an experimental mood, I might just have a Madman installed in its place, because I like the fact it's a real leather tip, and it's single-layer.

Not sure if they're still available, but here's the contact info for them:

I'm hearing you on this....
..the best break tip I ever had was on my BK-First Edition....
...15 mm LePro squeezed in a vise for four days.

I think glassy-sounding tips are only good for jumping.

The Mezz Sonic is a good tip. A bit slippery until you get used to it, but you can cetainly hit 'em hard.

Yup it's more slippery than regular leather type for sure but compared to say phenolic it's definitely grippier. I pair it with Kamui Chalk and I can't complain. And you're right, you can smash it as much as you can muscle!

that's exactly my experience. I have a Samsara on my OC which I can never complain about.
Not long ago I installed a Madman j/b tip for a friend of mine. Actually he wanted a phenolic tip but forgot to bring it with him, so I talked him into trying Madman j/b tip and he was so amused that asked whether I have more ;) These were 11-layered tips which are not produced any longer but Juan offers new tips which I'm going to order next.
+1 Samsara
+1 Madman!

I have always had a soft tip on my break cue.

I am more interested in control.

I am not interested in having a piece of granite on my tip that hits them hard, but does nothing for me when it comes to hitting them with draw, high, or low right or left when cut breaking at a less then warp speed.

That doesn't mean that hard break tips or plastic break tips don't have their place, but they just aren't for me.

Call me old fashioned, but i don't equate breaking them hard, with breaking them good.

Now why you not like the the tip that comes with the BK2? As far as I am concerned it is the best tip on earth. I can break at 9 ball or 8 ball and always draw the cue back to the head rail without ever miscuing. In 8 ball I can hit the second ball consistently with the perfect amount of english, never miscuing.

I took everyone's good advice on AZ and have installed a couple of Samsara tips. They play almost as good as the BK2 tip, but not quite. But if I had to choose a non-Predator tip it would be the Samsara. Hits them hard and doesn't miscue much.

Good question! I asked Predator to install a leather tip instead of the standard Phenolic tip that they normally put on their cues and candidly I don't know what type of tip they put on it. It's been a few years since I ordered the BK2 and I think I ordered it from Shane when he was with Predator. The leather tip must have gotten dry rot because a small chunk broke off and after breaking with the BreakRak for a couple of hours most of the tip flew off.

Besides, I am always looking to improve my equipment as well as my technique and if you don't try some new things, you will never know if they are right for you or not.

One of the high speed breakers at Buffalo Billiards has promised to work with me on my break next week, so I may have to get a substitute break tip pretty quick.

I have a Varney jump/break that works really well for me as a breaker and a jumper. Its 4 points ph/straight maple. I can smash the rack or finese the break with it, control the cue ball, and it jumps better than some other top name jump cues I've tried. There's a pic of it here somewhere on AZ. The tip is brown phenolic. I bought it from Kevin, he had it listed here on AZ. I also have 2 of his 4 point players, both are nice cues that can be had for a reasonable price, but the j/b is not for sale.

I thought that the Predator break cues were not 100% phenolic, but a sort of a hybrid. I know I tried to buy one of their break tips for another cue for someone and they would not sell it to me. I had to go by a dealer in Baltimore Md. to get it insalled by an authorized Predator cue/repair dealer. Predator says their tip composition is proprietary. To restate, I would go get one put on my break cue if I were you - best tip for breaking.
