Best US player: Archer or SVB?

I read a few year ago in a magazine(billiards digest, Inside Pool something like that) about Archer playing Shane in a tournament. Archer ended up beating Shane like 9-7 9-8 something like that and went on to win the tournament beating Alex in the finals. I think after the tourney Johnny said something to Kim Davenport about how good that kid(Shane) was going to be. Archer must have seen something in Shane then that about everyone else is seeing now.

I like the TAR events no matter what the race. The best part is knowing like a week before its on!.....something to look forward to I guess.

I REALLY would like to see some more 1 pocket action. I know many people say its paint drying, but I'm talking Frost, Efren, Gabe, Schmidt, Daulton, etc....there's no paint drying in those guys matches!

or maybe another all around?

G.

there are definitely 2 players on this list that i will NEVER bet on again!

A lot of these races to 100 turn out to be boring and a route. Please TAR, rethink that-50 is plenty. In a race to 100, there is no interest when the score is 20-12. To 50 however, the end is always in sight and interest remains high. I know Im not explaining this well but to me 100 is just way too much.

I agree, I wish they would make it best 4 out of 7 races to 15. It would make the matches more interesting and would make every shot count. In a race to 100 players take to many chances and miss several easy shots, but if you shorten the races? About three years ago I was at the US Open and watched a match between Mika and Ramel race to 15 it was a very interesting match and went double hill, it was great.

Well...since you asked...and I'm sure this isn't complete...this year he has won:
Great Southern Billiard Tour Stop
Turning Stone Casino Classic X
Jay Swanson Memorial
UPA Desert Shootout
SE Open 9 ball Tour Stop

I also believe he won a straight pool tournament here recently...and does his 10 ahead match against Nevel count?

He also just got 2nd in the 8-ball division in Galveston I know...and placed 3rd in the Las Vegas BCA/Generationpool/whatever they call it now tournament in Vegas...

I'd say he's still holding his own...lol :)

Just for the record, JA did not win the Swanee this year. He did win it in 2008 when he beat "Big Wave" Dave Hemmah in the final. Mitch Ellerman won it this year, beating Oscar Dominguez for the title.

Good catch. Johnny certainly hasn't had any shortage of wins lately. He's won a lot of tournaments, he just hasn't won the Open or the WPC, so people think he's not winning anymore.

Shane is a true professional that has so much talent it just drips off him...

that said, the reason I would take shane is because of the fact that he is as professional as he is, not because of talent.

I cannot stand watching Archer play for the record.

Corey

Basically if Shane wants to play Johnny he has to go to Johnny's room and play on a Gold Crown. Maybe it will happen some day I wouldn't hold my breath. I suspect if someone wanted to pay enough they would probably play somewhere else but who knows.

Johnny is where Shane hopes to be one day. I think he will get there but he has many years ahead of him to match what Johnny has done. To me it is generational thing, it is a natural progression you see in all sports and games. I am just glad I get to see it happen.

One guy I think could match Johnny's accomplishments if he really wanted to is Corey. But he doesn't seem to have the same drive or desire or whatever you want to call it that Johnny and Shane seem to possess.
I feel exactly the same way about Corey. When he came on the scene, I felt that he would have a Johnny or Earl career. He in recent years, just appears to be bored with pool most times.

Tony Drago is entered in the US Open. Corey said he was the Worst player on team Europe. He may be right-Europe is so strong but still id like to see a grudge match between these two. Tar could do a race to 40 in one day with these two i believe. Ive mentioned this before (the match up) and no one seemed at all interested but it's still the one i want to see most!

what johnny did in his prime in big tournaments is amazing. shane will have a lot of work to do on that front to catch up, if he wants to.

Thanks, Troop. I just figured Johnny does pretty well on his own merit without having to get credit for one he didn't take down.

BTW, Johnny did not play in the Swanee this year. Why, I don't know, but he probably just wasn't on the Left Coast. First place paid $2,500 and 2nd was $1,500. So while the tournament has a strong field and is a very good event to take down, not everyone will go through the travel expense to play in the event.

both are great players but until Shane gets another decade of stats to look at Archer wins by virtue of "body of work"

JA has alot more natural talent, SVB has a great drive to be the best in the world-he has earned his championships.

It is a gererational gap like JCIN said, rite now JA is a better player-in 5 years probably not, in 10 years SVB will be the best of the 2.

Of all the young players Wu Cha Ching is the most talented player, but i'm still pulling for SVB.

battle of the young guns

I would love to see TAR do a race to 100 ten ball between Wu and SVB. And the winner of this could play Alex. I think this would be an all out war between two of the best young players in the world and I know there would be a ton of people that would pay to see this match

Just for clarification, Alex was down 22 on day 2, not 3. I think he was only down 9 or 10 going into day 3. Still pretty impressive.

You are correct he was down 22 games on day two, but on day three he was down 16 games. At one point the score was 85 to 69 and Alex came back to win 100 to 94 so he had a 31 to 9 game run!!!

I am willing to stake SVB on a Diamond table against Johnny for at least 10K, so all it takes to make this match happen is to get Johnny to play and find a backer.

I have talked to Johnny before and at that time he only wanted to play Shane at his pool hall on his TIGHT gold crown.

A race to 100 would ba a helluva mach up that would be interesting to see. It would truly be gambling in my opinion. Archer is more consistant, but I think Shane's high gear has a little more top end that Johnny's.

As far as the statement made about Archer being the best America has EVER produced is a little skewed in my opinion. He's the best 9-ball of his generation, but I don't think he's the best America has ever produced. I'm telling my age a little bit, but I saw Harold Worst, Luther Lassiter and Don Willis play and for the cash I'd take any of the three over Archer in 9-ball. But, at the same time it was a different era and the rules weren't exactly the same. Nevertheless, truly great plays would adapt and Worst, Lassiter and Willis would be great in any era. Not to take anything away from Archer, because he's a champion many times over. I like watching Johnny play and his consistant play during the last 20 years has been impressive.
for the cash ja is still the best9ball player alive. nobody has a will-loss record close to his. shane cant fade that.

Any tight GC is fine with JA, dosent have to be at his room. hope your good-say hello to ur dad for me pls. :) JA has no shortage of backers, when he finds a game he likes he can raise 6 figures in 5 minutes. I will see if I can make it happen, i have tried before.

thats the game i'd like to see too. Wu is brutal, SVB would have his hands full, they both would for that matter,
