Best value balls?

I have a practice table and want to get a good set of balls. I have tried the "Mike Massey" set, but they just don't hit nice like the ones down at the pool hall. Do I just need to pony up and invest in some $200 Aramiths? Any others to recommend?

Yes, buy the Aramiths. Joe Tucker is selling some sets for $160. You may want to see if he has any left.

An alternative set is Brunswick Centennials.

Does anyone know the difference between the Aramith offerings? (Sportcraft, Premier, Crown, etc.) Do they hit differently, or just cosmetic differences?

The difference between the Super Aramith Pros and their less expensive balls is in the materials used. The SP's use a higher quality phenolic resin. Doesn't mean the less expensive sets are complete crap, but they probably won't last as long, may be more prone to chipping, holding chalk, wearing/burning the cloth etc.

If the extra money is not an issue go with the best balls. If it is, get the highest quality you can afford. If money is a major issue, then buy the cheapest balls you can find. But to answer your question, the difference is more than just cosmetic. The better balls are made from higher quality materials and are manufactured to tighter tolerances so that all the balls in a given set will be closer to being the same as the others in roundness, weight, and size. In the top of the line sets the balls may be matched to spec. Because of this, if you play with a different high quality CB like the measles ball, it will play truer to correct because it will be more likely to be the same size and weight as EACH ball in the set. So the amount of draw/follow etc. will be more consistent through out the set of object balls.

Obviously, how much more these benefits are worth paying is up to you. Good luck with your decision.

Best low priced balls

Hello, I'm a new member and just spotted this post. I am also wondering about the same topic. Hard for me to part with $160.00 for balls. I see balls out on ebay all the time some with a box that might be from the "new" balls they purchased and put their old not so great balls in the new ball box.

Can you tell by looking at a picture of the balls what the heck you are buying?

Search the internet and you can find Aramith Duramith Balls for under $200. Spend a little more to have the best and you will never regret it.

Used

If you look you can find used centennials for less. How much less depends on how used. Very used centennials are still much better than walmart stuff.(or equal) I also have a couple sets if you are interested.

Brunswick Centennials

Best deal I found on Centennials was from Scot Surbine at Proficient Billiards - available online. Google it.
