Best way to find some basic local instruction

I have been out of pool for almost 20 years and as I start to get back into it I want to make sure I have the basics correct before I get a bunch of poor repetition.

What is the best way to find an instructor who can walk me through the basics, grip, stance, etc..

I wouldn't waste my time calling someone for help or having over, I tried that and it doesn't help. I am from Austin,Tx and I am now in Houston. Can't wait to move back to Austin next month or so. Dalo, best aiming system that can be simple for you is learning Hal Houle system. It easy and understanding to learn. Only thing that will take a while to get it down, is "reading the angles"once you know the angles you can pretty much know which quarters,,center and edges hits on the ball.

there is a LEFT EDGE,LEFT QUARTER,CENTER,RIGHT QUARTER, AND RIGHT EDGE. Most of the shots are hit Left quarter, center and right quarter on most shot, only time to hit at the edges on the object ball is when it a angle that is 35 degrees and more. That why it is easy but same time going to take time to get it down is READING THE ANGLE and knowing which spot on the object ball to hit at.

Lot of rookie players or low rank players do is they over thinking and thinking " okay that the spot that the spot I gotta gotta hit the ball at" well really you don't . which why I use the Hal Houle system. It take the guess work and ghost ball method out. if got any question....can PM me.

Find someone who can do a good analysis of your mechanics. They should be able to do video analysis. It is possible to do the analysis and provide feedback without video equipment but it is much harder and less convincing for most students. The coach/instructor needs to know what to look for.

It seems that you found a bad instructor and concluded that all instructors are worthless. I find that offensive. What was the specific problem with the instructor you found? Did he have any kind of training or certification?

Maybe you didn't notice, but you are in the "Ask an Instructor" forum. Here, a person asked for an instructor to help him with his FUNDAMENTALS. You, because either you had a bad instructor, or you were a poor student, advice him not to go to anyone, then proceed to tell him how he should be aiming. See any problem there? Kinda like someone asking for a school for their kids, and you telling them that you dropped out because you didn't learn anything, and they shouldn't send their kid to school because it's just a waste of time.

Bob Jewett, I did in fact, that I've tried to contact instructor and y'all know who he is but not going to name name but I called back and was astound to hear the price he was asking for and I was like **** man, I am not asking to spend the whole day with you, I am only asking for an hour or 2 hours to learn something. I told him what I mostly got down, but only told him what I think I needing help on more and he told me the price and I was like wtf!!! So I didn't set up an appointment and forget about it.

I was taught by Hal Houle when I was visiting a friend in California and we were playing pool and lucky enough to be in the right billiards area that Hal himself walk in and watched us playing then came over and help us, FOR FREE but I still offer to give some money and all he asked was food at grill and soda so I did. I got 2 aiming systems down but I wanna learn other, but same time I wanna work on different thing. I feel instructor charge way too much for the person who got love for the games and not going to get anywhere when they being asked for high price to learn something. I mean hight like couple 200 or so and I was like excuse me you smoking crack? so I didn't set an appointment.

There are some well respected instructors that can understand not lot of people have enough money and there some that like well sorry I don't care that my price so tough shit. I learned from Hal and that was enough for me and I stop asking instructors for help cause it always going to be same "more more more more money" I just help people for free or a soda.

This has been talked about many times on here. Hal and you don't do it for a living. Neither of you travel the country for students with all that expense, or have their own facility with all that expense. Try going to some college and tell them you want it for free, you can get their textbooks and don't need them. NO, and I repeat, NO instructor is getting rich off lessons. Not by a long shot.

JPOOL, all the aiming systems in the world won't help you if you don't have solid fundamentals... and that seems to be what the players looking for is building fundamentals. All the aiming systems essentially find the same spot that you want to hit on the object ball, but if you can't shoot straight consistantly then how are you going to consistantly hit that spot your aiming at?

In a 6 week course I teach, the first week you don't even shoot at a ball. It's all basic fundamentals. If a student really gets the first week, the rest of the 5 weeks are easier and they get far more out of it.

okay apparently no one understand what I am talking about, nor did I mention about college. Pool and college is different buddy. College is not free which I know thanks you very much and pool just a games to me. This is my last time being on this "ask the instructor" forum. bunch of arrogant people on here.

There's a difference between factual and arrogant. ;)

Jpool,

Some can give you an answer without being arrogant & condescending & some can not.

Please don't judge the whole book by the first page that you read.

Best,
Rick

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who responded or sent pm's. A lot of great information from everyone.

Much more help than I was expecting.

Bob...I too find that offensive. The OP requested that I contact him via text and phone when I was in TX one year ago. I did so, with no response from him whatsoever. Nothing replaces a qualified instructor who uses video analysis to highlight stroke flaws, and who can then communicate how to fix them. Wonder what he spent on his cue(s). I bet it was perhaps more than some good quality instruction costs. Pool school, like college, isn't free either...although all of us here give freely of our advice and experience, expecting nothing in return.

It may be best to not judge the book at all.....upon further research I found this Link...Click for More:

What is the difference between arrogance and confidence? This isn’t a hypothetical question, because I’m about to attempt to answer it. For myself, mostly. I think that the answer lies very much in the same place as the answer to this question; “What is the difference between anger and violence?”

The answer to this lies in relation to action, and arguably, upon it’s intent. Anger becomes violence when it violates someone else’s freedoms, rights, comfort, etc. Essentially, there is nothing wrong with anger. Anger itself is a very natural second emotion, usually spawning from a smaller, easier to handle emotion such as frustration, or fear. When our anger is used against someone else, in any way, whether it be to control with force or with coercion, we have violence.

So back to the original question; What is the difference between arrogance and confidence? I may be wrong, but I think that arrogance is confidence that oversteps the boundaries of appropriateness. In other words, if we have our own little circle of control in our lives – it embodies things we can directly control (not influence) such as what we think, or how we feel about what we think. When we step outside that circle with our confidence, we risk stepping on other people’s toes.
