Best woman you have ever played?

This is mainly for the men on the board. Who is the best female player you have ever played? I am talking in a money set or in a tournament, and what was the outcome (or the normal outcome most of the time if you played more then once, you win, you lose, you are about even, ect...) Try not to include that one game you paid $10 to play Jeanette Lee in Vegas, if you played her for cash or in a tournament groovy, I want to see situations when the pressure was on both players and at least a race to 5 set.

I would say the toughest matches I have had against a female opponent are against Joanne Ashton, when she is shooting her best she is damn good.

Like many in the New York City area, I've played quite a few times in the 9-ball tournament at Hall of Fame Billiards in Brooklyn. Jean Balukas plays in the event, and although she has beaten me more than I've beaten her, I've beat her several times, including in the finals. Jean is the only ten-time women's world champion I've played against, LOL.

SJM, how does she shoot these days compared to Corr and Fisher? Think she would be the best woman player in the world still if she came back?

Jean still plays great, but she only plays a few hours a month. Even so, she plays like a WPBA top 5, but not, in my opinion, on a par with Fisher or Corr. Having said that, though, if Jean wanted to put in the kind of hours that Karen Corr puts in, I think that, even now, she could challenge for #1. FYI, Jean breaks the balls better than anyone on tour, even better than Ga Young Kim.

Aileen Pippen. The first time we played I ask if she wanted to play some 14.1 she said sure. I broke and the first inning she ran 60! Now to me that is pretty strong. I was shocked! I get to practice with Aileen fairly often now. We play for appetizers at a local restaurant so they are not really high pressure matches but no one wants to lose that’s for sure. I was stuck so many once so I had to buy a ringside table for 10 people at Thursday night boxing to get square. She usually beats me handily. She will be playing her first event since having twins and getting married this week in Lincoln OR. I’ll be rooting for her.

Yes, Breakup, Aileeen is a fine player. She was counted among the Top 16 seeds in the WPBA when she played the tour regularly, and came third in the BCA Open (1999?) not that long ago. Nice to hear she's in the field at the WPBA Nationals.

Best female player I've played.

I don't get out of my basement very often, but I did play in a VNEA league for a couple years. Diana Minor was on a opposing team that we played regularly. She plays well and is a very nice person on top of that. She would have to be the best woman player that I've had the privledge of playing.

I didn't really consider straight pool.

If we're talking straight pool, the best I've played is Jeanette Lee. At the Amsterdam Billiard Club a couple of years ago, in front of many of my friends, Jeanette ran 152 against me, to my knowledge the longest run ever by a woman. About a year earlier, she had run a 124 against Mika Immonen in the same room.

I've also played straight pool with Helena Thornfeldt, who plays the game very well. In our last hookupo, we raced to 500, and Helena ran a 70 along the way. At 470 - 397 down, I took on a very low percentage break shot and missed. After Helena ran 30 and out for a 500 -397 win , one of the railbirds told me he had bet someone on the side I'd make it to 400! Seemed a little upset that I'd taken on (what I'll admit was) a pretty silly shot at 397. Oh well, can't please everyone.

Finally, I've played straight pool with Gerda Hofstatter, and she once ran a 74 on me.

These ladies can shoot!

Ahh, those onlookers and their contributions! Very amusing!

Piglit,
An excellent example of why betting with point spreads is silly, why betting on other players who don't share your same motivation is silly, why betting on sports is just sick in addition to being silly. Actually, I'm convinced (I wonder if its too late to get the kid's college money back from the off-shore bookie).

Michelle Rakin. She's a phenom here on the west coast. She has won 9 Western Women titles in a row. I played her in the USPPA tournament in Reno a few years ago. I had to give her 2 games in a race to 8. I thought it would be an easy match but when I saw her draw the cb back the full length of the table without so much as a twitch, I knew I might be in some serious trouble. She beat me 8 to ? I think I won a couple of games or so but can't remember because she put me in a coma.

I was wondering what happened to her. I'm glad she is still playing. She is a beautiful woman in addition to being a fine player.

To the original post, my fiancee is a 5 in the APA, same as me. We have some great battles on the home table. Out of the last 100 games we have played I probably won 51. She was the female POY in our league last year.

The best female player I have played was my fiancee's girlfriend Alicia ( a former teammate of ours). She was a strong 6 in APA. But she played like a 7 when playing for cash after the league matches were over and the guys wanted to exact revenge on her for beating them.

She always took their cash. I backed her for small stakes all the time.

I lost a tournament match to Robin Bell, Dodson now, at Hard Times in Bellflower many years ago and the crowd went nuts! She was so excited and if my memory serves me correctly, she even apologized. She played real good in that match and deserved to win. I think that's the only time I've played a woman that could actually play and I don't mean that in a negative way at all because I know there are some women that can real good. I just haven't had the pleasure of playing them yet.

Well I could have played Ga Young Kim last night but I was too tired after a tournament so I passed although I was interested. If she is still in town tonight I may give it a go for a couple of hundred a set for 2 sets.

I've played Melissa Herndon a lot of times in tournaments and she is a force to reckon with although I do have a pretty good record against her. (Don't get mad for me revealing this and drill me the next time we meet LOL.)

I beat Robin Bell the one time I played her in a tournament at Hard Times.

I matched up with Helena a number of years ago when I wasn't quite as good and she beat me 9-8 and 9-7 to take the cash. Also played Jennifer Chen who beat me at that time.

I would have to say the four women I played are pretty close talent wise and any one of them could beat the other on a given day (and beat me too).

I haven't played Joanne yet and I don't think I would want to either LOL!
Definitely the best female player I've seen so far.

Karen Corr! I played her in a Joss event here in Rochester a couple of years ago. She won 9 - 6. Boy, did I get grief until she started beating most of the best men in the Northeast on a regular basis. When Julie Kelly is playing at the top of her game, she plays very well indeed. Never played Allison. After watching Karen up close, they are probably an even game. I like Jeanette Lee. She plays! And for the money! If all the best women were playing on their own dime, winner take all, I'd bet on Jeanette.

Yep. Her sister shoots OK, but Bev is most definately a step down, shooting my best I beat Bev, if I shot my best and Joanne shot her best it would be up in the air who wins. I played Kathy Macdonald for small cash once, she is decent and played on the WPBA but in my mind Joanne has a top speed way higher then Kathy. On the box Bonnie Plowman is the best due to her break, but Joanne on a 9-foot is the tops in Calgary for sure and should have her tour card. She also seems to have nerves of steel when playing in big events against good male players, if she played against the top women like she does against the top men I think she would be top 10, she actually plays worse against the women from waht I have seen, she really likes to beat on the guys and has more fire in her game when playing them.
