MANILA, PHILIPPINES -- Come November, the most prestigious and biggest
pool tournament in the world will be broadcast live over the Philippines'
largest television network, ABS-CBN.

Raya Sports and Events, the Filipino promoter of the 2007 Philippines World
Pool Championship, and ABS-CBN Sports forged an agreement yesterday
for the live broadcast of the tournament from November 3 to 11. The
event will be staged at the Araneta Coliseum.

Yen Makabenta, Raya Sports President, signed the agreement with Peter
Musngi, ABS-CBN Sports Managing Director. The contract signing was held
at Restaurant 9501 of ELJ Building , ABS-CBN's headquarters.

"We believe this partnership will enable us to bring the WPC to more
viewers across the entire country," Makabenta said. "Combined with
Araneta Center as venue, we will touching a new level of fan participation
in our sport."

The ABS-CBN broadcast of the WPC will feature its own commentary and
analysis in Filipino, separate from the international broadcast in English of
ESPN.

Last year's WPC, the first held in the country, garnered 22.3 million viewers
according to professional pollster Social Weather Station (SWS). Early
sponsors who have signed up with the 2007 WPC include presentors
Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) and San Miguel
Corporation as well as consistent billiards supporters Hotel Sofitel and
Accel.

Raya Sports has brought the WPC into the country in partnership with
Matchroom Sport of UK and ESPN-Star Sports, the official international
broadcaster which will bring the event live to some 140 million subscribers
in Asia alone. This does not include broadcasts in Europe, North America
and the Middle East through ESS affiliates in the Sky, Fox and other
Murdoch channels worldwide.

The 2007 Philippines WPC will bring in 128 of the best pool players from 46
countries around the world. These include former world champions Wu Cha
Ching, Mikka Imonen, Efren "Bata" Reyes, Thorsten Hohmann, Earl
Strickland, Alex Pagulayan and Ronnie Alcano, the defending champion.

Of the 128 slots for the WPC, ten will be open for the five-day qualifying
tournament to be held at the Star Billiards Center in Quezon City starting
October 27, 2007. Over 150 players from all over the world have signed up
for the 10 qualifiers, including expanded contingents from the Philippines ,
Taiwan , Japan , Europe, the US , Asia and the Middle East.

Lu Hui-Chan wins qualifying tournament 1

luhuichan.jpg

Chinese Taipei's Lu Hui-Chan has become the first winner from the tough
qualifiers to secure a place in the 2007 Philippines World Pool
Championship.

Lu, 27, defeated countryman Chang Yu-lung 9-2 in the final, which was
held on Saturday afternoon at a packed and thriving Star Billiards Center in
Quezon City, Philippines.

A total of 80 players took part in the first of ten qualifying competitions
that will complete the line-up for the main tournament.

The last four players all came from Chinese Taipei but Lu (pictured right),
the World Junior 9-Ball Champion in 1998 and 1999, was the one
celebrating at the end and will now take his place in Group 4.

Another Taiwanese player stands in his way as he will begin his campaign
on Saturday, November 3 against fourth seed Yang Ching-shun.

This will be the third time that Lu has qualified for the World Pool
Championship, the most prestigious competition in the pool calendar.

In 1999 in Cardiff, Wales, Lu came on top of a six-man group before
victories against Steve Leisen (Luxembourg) and Oliver Ortmann (Germany)
took him to the Last 16, where he was defeated by Japan's Akikumo
Toshikawa.

Lu again reached the knock-out stages in 2003 after heading an eight-man
group that included Nick van den Berg (Holland), Kunihiko Takahashi
(Japan) and Luc Salvas (Canada). His run in the tournament ended at the
last 64 phase with a loss against Sweden's Nicholas Bergendorff.

Ichigaki sets up dream tie with Reyes

uchigakireyes.jpg

Japan's Kenichi Ichigaki has set up a dream tie with Filipino pool legend
Efren Reyes.

Ichigaki won the second qualifying tournament at the Star Billiards Center
on Saturday evening and his reward is an opening day match against 1999
World Champion Reyes, widely regarded as one of the best players of all
time.

This pairing will be the first main encounter of the tournament held on TV
Table One on Saturday, November 3 and will be seen by pool fans live
around the world.

It will be an amazing start to his World Pool Championship career for
Ichigaki, who has never qualifed for this competition before.

In the second of ten qualifying events in Quezon City, Philippines, 79
players took part and Ichigaki secured his place in the main draw with a
9-3 triumph over Vietnam's Do Huang Quan.

Players from Chinese Taipei had dominated the opening tournament and
another two men - Chang You-mau and Wu Yu-lin - reached the
semi-finals but lost to Do and Ichigaki respectively.

The Japanese player now becomes player H in Group 6 and will meet either
Liu Chun-chuan (Chinese Taipei) or Alain Martel (Canada) in his second
match.

Group 6 now consists of the following players:

A. Efren Reyes (Philippines), B. Tony Drago (Malta), C. Tony Robles (USA),
D. Liu Chun-chuan (Chinese Taipei), E. Alain Martel (Canada), F. Tomasz
Kaplan (Poland), G. Ceri Worts (New Zealand), H. Kenichi Ichigaki (Japan).

My choices:

Van Boening, Shane --- 40/1
Alcaide, David --- 66/1
Carvajal, Alejandro --- 500/1

SVB's odds is now down to 16-1. The 40-1 odds was 11 weeks ago, a lot of
things had happened since then.

If you don't know what you're talking about don't speak up. Here he is 40:1. They haven't updated since the Open. Feel free to kick me some $$ for that extra 24:1 if he wins.

I started this thread and I said I found a website that was giving the
previous odds that I've provided. They have updated since then and SVB's
odds are now down to 16-1. I hope you'll read this thread in its entirety
and I really hope I am wrong that you have a reading comprehension problem.

Here's the site and have a good day!

I apologize, did not mean to seem rude. I did earlier paste the 40:1 odds in another post, and rather than look up the link I posted here that it was still available 40:1. I then saw again that you mentioned it was not 40:1. I just want all our betting public to get the best odds they can.

It's all good bro, no offense taken...

Truth is

there are many great players that will compete, but the truth is, there are very few that can sustain themselves for the length of the whole tournament. I noticed Taiwan is sending in all kinds of players this year, and Japan is sending quite a few too. And the Chinese players seem to be real good.

Quite Frankly, I don't think we will see a Filapino win it this year. Although, they have some emerging 2nd and 3rd tier players, I think that a player from one of the other countries will emerge Victorious.

Wouldn't it be great if it was our own Shane Van Boening??? His consistency and demeanor will be tested to the max in the WPC, but I think he has what it takes to get there.

Taiwanese Teenagers Win WPC Spots

(Three-time Junior World Champion Wu Yu-Lun)

Two Taiwanese 18-year-olds, Ko Pin-yi and Wu Yu-lun, won Qualifiers 3
and 4 at the Star Billiards Center on Sunday to secure spots in the main
draw of the 2007 Philippines World Pool Championship on November 3-11 at
the Araneta Coliseum.

The duo emerged in two thrilling all-Taiwanese finals of the qualifying
tournament. Ko bested Lu Hsun-cheng 9-7 in Event 3. While Wu,
three-time world junior champion, won over Chien Ching-ju in a hill-hill
battle.

Filipino players again failed to make a dent on the Taiwanese onslaught,
although they improved their performance somewhat by entering the
semifinals of both qualifiers.

In Event 3, Roberto Gomez and Ruel Esquillo contested the semifinals
against the Taiwanese players. But both lost heartbreakers to their
opponents -- Gomez to Ko by the score of 7-5, and Esquillo to Lu by 7-6.

The same pattern also marked Event 4. Warren Kiamco and Dondon
Ranzalan entered the semifinals and lost to their Taiwanese opponents-
Kiamco to Chien by the score of 7-4, and Ranzalan to Wu by 7-6.

Significantly, Wu and Ko finished first and second in the World Junior Pool
Championship in Sydney, Australia last year.

Ko, nicknamed "The Prince of Pool" in his native country, will now enter
Group 5 of the main tournament. He will face 2003 world champion
Thorsten Hohmann in his opening match on Monday, November 5.

Wu, on the other hand, will be joining Group 15. He will play Johnny Archer
of the United States in his opening match on Tuesday, November 6.

Chinese Taipei has now won three of four qualifiers in the ongoing
qualifying round of the 2007 WPC. There are six more qualifiers left to be
contested.
