I did this tonight when I was shutting off my band saw. The blade come out of the safety guide by the shut off switch. Below is pic of shut off switch and the blade that runs through the guide.

Yikes! Sorry to hear this happened to you Doug. I guess the saying "... blood, sweat, & tears..." wasn't created out of nothing. Wish you a speedy recovery, & glad it didn't turn out worse.

Oh Doug just do what the rest of us do when we get a boo boo. Put some CA on it and get back to work.. :p

It is a 14" Delta band saw. I went to Olathe Medical Hospital and only got 4 stiches.. Doc said it is a 15 stick cut normally. Once I told her I had to have my finger flexiable she only put 4 in. As it turns out the nut on the top pulley used to hold it on came loose! That is why the blade come out of the guide protector by shut off switch. Just a small word of advice.... DONT TRY THIS AT HOME!! SUCKS!!!

I hope someone learns from this. Other than myself. Even though this pulley was a factory install, always go back a double check all the nuts and make sure there all tight.

Joe. Normally i clean my cuts out with thinner and super glue them here in my shop. Cant tell after a coulpe days there was a cut. I couldnt get this one to stop bleeding also had very little movement from the knuckle forward!! Still cant move it much but I sure can feel it!!!

Troy:

I think a put a new meaning to blood sweat and tears along with building my cues! LOL There is several cues going out that will have more of my DNA on them than usual!!

What a freak accident!! Seems impossible to check for everything everytime.

I hope your finger regains full feeling and movement soon.

Thanks Gary! Doc say it will just take a little time and it willbe fully functional again. She also said take a few days off also. I told YEA RIGHT like that can happen....

Sorry Doug, But I just can not visualise how you got cut from the saw. Have you got a picture showing where you got cut from?

You dodged one there. I still don't understand how you got cut. The switch is usually on the left opposite of the blade.

Did they do x-rays by any chance? I once cut the top of My thumb at the first joint, was similar to yours but maybe a little worse, and the blade was a brand new pruning blade, the curved kind that cuts really well, and was thicker, so It basically left a nasty strip in the middle and cut on each side of the blade. Yeah, a freaking hand saw, one swipe, and did that much damage. I never went to the ER even though I probably should have, but I could not stop working at the time, and still had to use It, so I flushed with alcohol, closed It with steri strips, and wrapped It up the best I could.. It kept trying to heal up, then splitting open no matter what I tried. it was just in a bad place. Anyhow the reason I ask is because I actually cut into the bone of the knuckle, and later could easily feel the bone missing. Eventually It healed up, but It stayed stiff for many years, and I could not close that thumb. Even to this day It's not the same, and I get some bad arthritis in that joint. You may have cut deeper then You realize. Mine was obvious because It spread out like a banana peel, and could see right to the bone, although I didn't realize until later that It got that far into My knuckle.

A band saw can do some real damage, looks like you caught It just in time before things got really ugly. If It got into the bone though, then possible you will be feeling it for a while, and It will be hard to close that finger. For me It wasn't pain that stopped It from closing. It just did not have that much range of motion for some reason. Hope It heals quickly for ya.

Ouch

I was cut across the knuckle of my left index finger. That cost me 3 mos. of physical theropy after hand surgery. I cut the tennon with a snap off type of razor blade. There are a lot of things going on right under the skin of your fingers.

I wish you a speedy recovery!!!!

Doug,

When you get a chance, could you take a picture of where and how the blade came out of the blade guard? I just want to make sure (as best I can) that I don't relive your experience.

Hope the finger is healing up nicely.
