Big deal if my cue looks nice

It could be diamond studded and I wouldn't care.

You can only see the detail in someone's cue if you look at it up close. You can't even get a good look at it while they're playing. Nevermind the fact that you're not even looking at your cue while you're playing.

It's like having a custom putter, who can see the detail?

Maybe I should get a bright purple or neon cue to try and throw off my opponent?

I know Dennis Hatch has a great custom cue. I went to watch him play and stood 5 feet from him, and I couldn't make out any of the detail in his cue.

People dont get custom cues so people like you can see the details from far away. They could care less what you think. I got my cue for me and for me only. I dont care if anyone appreciates the details in my cue. I appreciate my cue and thats all that matters. Alot of customs out there now are functional art, and if someone wants to have a piece of art so be it. I honestly dont know what the point of your thread is.

I'm just saying that you don't look at it while you're playing, you're just looking at the tip. I actually have played with the same cue for years and I can't even tell you what designs are on it.

I buy , own , collect , etc , cues for my own enjoyment. I could give a crap if anyone else can see what I have from 5 feet away.

If that's the motivation for owning nice gear then I have other questions. ;)

And you are entitled to youre opinion, but that doesn't mean that theres something wrong with a person for having a custom cue with detail in it. Good for you for not knowing anything about your cue. But i appreciate the hard work and precision that goes into building a custom cue.

I guess I am failing to see the point of this thread. People own nice cues for the same reasons people own nice cars, houses, clothes, shoes, watches...

Why it should even matter to the point that it prompted you to start a thread over it I do not understand.

You are entitled to your own opinion, but a post like this on a site with so many cue lovers is not going to elicit any positive response. Its like going to an art forum and telling everyone that art is useless and you dont get it.

i once saw a szamboti with a bright neon leather wrap! that's kind of random but it's what i'm posting

And the ability to have beautifully designed custom equipment is one of the things that makes pool unique imo. What other sporting goods are featured in museum exhibitions and win awards for artistry?

My thoughts exactly:thumbup:

Good example. The difference between my $500 cue and the $2,000+ cues made by the same guy is all in the artwork. Mine is dead simple, not even a wrap (the way I prefer it), others he has made are highly detailed with different materials, designs, etc. Beautiful cues, but they play the same. It's just like going to a car show and seeing the extravagant paint jobs on some cars. It doesn't make them drive any nicer, but it sure adds to the beauty and is worth it to the owner.

do you look at your wheels while your driving ? just sayin'

btw i shoot with a sneaky :grinning-moose:

There are many players that notice cues. I complimented players on their cues and players asked about and complimented my cue(s) and many times my case(s).

A lot of times it is a nice conversation starter to ask someone about the cue or make a remark. Have met and made a few friends that have become playing buddies.

I have a lot of people comment on how nice my cue looks and a lot of them probably couldn't name two custom cue makers. I got it because of how beautiful it is to me, but it is nice to hear others compliment it as well.
I also looks at others cues and talk to people about their cues. Some stand out from a distance, and some you need to be close to to see the details.

rollex or timex who cares, they do the same job. if you can afford it and it makes you happy go for it.

I agree, I think having spending hundreds of extra dollars on a flashy looking cue is pretty lame. I'm for the sneaky pete designs myself. However, if it makes some people happy, good for them. I just feel like some people might do it for show...kind of like driving a flashy car. Or how some people list their cues and their "elite" custom designed cue case in their signature. But if it makes them feel better about themselves, then so be it. Sorry if this offends anyone, but just telling it how I see it.

You couldnt be farther from the truth. I know a lot of guys who buy custom cues who are not out to show off but are the ones who appreciate the quality materials and meticulous handiwork of the cuemaker. Between my friends and I there is no showing off or jealousy going on. We just love cues and are genuinely happy when someone picks up a nice cue and we sit around and talks for hours about it. Sometimes I enjoy that more than actually playing pool.

Hmmmm

The only thing that is "lame" as you mention, is when a "newbie" with a total of 2 posts comes on a pool forum, and complains and insults other pool nuts with a bunch of child like posts because his choice of shooting eqipment is so superior in the choices that others shoot with. I like fancy and as you can see from my very prominent signature....SNEAKY's too!! I"m sure there is some guy thinking how can someone buy a cue, even a Sneaky, when the pool halls provide them for free !!!!!! That could also be considered lame as you say !!!!
