Biggest money match you have ever seen?

I was there when James Waldon beat Flyboy out of $150,000 in Baton Rouge at Lamberts. Lambert?s was a pool hall and restaurant (they had the best ham steak!). That was sometime in the mid 90s.

When James sealed the deal it was 5am or so in the morning (after several days of off and on playing) and since it was so late and so many days, there was hardly anyone else there. To this day, it's very surreal that I witnessed that.

If a pool match ever should have been filmed it was that one! It was by far the best 1p I have ever seen played..... Plus, it would have been cool to have footage of Jack "off the stall". IMO, Jack moves better than anyone on the planet, in another life may have been a Russian chess champion. And James plays 1p pretty sporty as well....

I do not believe Jack was "off the stall". :D It was one of his tenents to make sure to take a very long time to beat his opponent, so his opponent would think it was the TIME that got him, not the skill of his opponent, and would therefore be willing to try another match for big money.

I am not toally sure Jack couldn't have beat him flat in 10 hours or so...

Jack Cooney vs Toby Flaherty, Las Vegas Cue Club, One-Pocket, Jack getting 10-8, 8 ahead for $25K, freeze up $50K.

Didn't see the whole thing but I understand it lasted 11 days. Some of the best One-Pocket I've ever seen.

it is well documented by alot of people that Archie the Greek beat Bobby Baldwin for $1,500,000 at the Rum Runner on Trop back in 93. they played for $50,000 a game 9ball on a bar box after 3 nights play Archie was up 30 games, I wasnt there.

Aside from the fact that Jay H. sez it took 3 days, even otherwise I'd bet my left testicle that it didn't take 11 days.

Pool stories have a tendency to grow as they get older. :D

I witnessed the Durbin vs Watson match up for 40 large at the derby and then at Michaels a few months later they promised Watson another 40,000 dollar set and he got there and it took 50 people to bet 8,000. lol

Jack Cooney vs. James Walden at DCC several years back. 50K each, 100K total bet. Eight ahead One Pocket.
Ditto.

But, it had to have lasted longer than three days, didn't it???

Cornerman,

Just long enough to convince the sweators that Walden lost because he got weak, and not because he was in an unwinnable game.

That Frisco Jack is one smart cookie. :D

P.S. I had a 5K piece of the bet.
They named a room after that match and put a sign on the wall declaring it the Cooney and Walton room. I pointed that out 3 times over the years, but it was never changed. It was still there this year.

This story may have some truth to it. They agreed to begin play at 12 noon and quit at 8PM each day. One day I got there at noon and they started with Jack being 3 games ahead (not sure how many days they already played at this point). They played for 8 hours and agreed to continue for two more. After 10 hours of incredible playing, they end the day just as it began, with Jack being 3 ahead.

I could envision many days in which the score barely budged either way. Maybe one of our Vegas guys can verify the length of this matchup.

Kamikaze Bob losing either 18 or 20 grand to a player from Northern California. Bob couldn't make 2 balls in the row and was helpless getting the seven. First time in Reno, drunk on free Heinekens, watched Busta, Carter, Archer, Sigel,etc...in the pro event, then watched a perfect hustle. Good time, especialy since it was the first year I started playing pool.

Its written up in Playing Off The Rail. Billy Inc. was there taking more money from Bob who also lost backing Louis Lemke versus Annigoni in the most lop-sided ahead set I've ever seen for 5 grand.

wrong match

Jay was speaking of Cooney/Walden 3 days at the derby.

I was at Diamonds Billiards here in Dallas when Cliff and Billy were playing 500/game. Then I saw CJ vs John Schmidt for 5k, I think. I don't remember if it was 5k or a little more than that. The biggest game I saw in person though was our local David G vs Chris Bartram playing 9ball, 11 ahead, for a total of a little over 28,000. I had a small side bet of 500 on David G and it was gone in under 2 hours...I saw some great pool by Chris Bartram though!!

i played a drug dealer in tucson in 1971 4 out of 7 9 ball on bar box for 5000 a set. beat him out of 90k. never saw him again. sparky
