Remember Joann very well, as well as her father Harvey Mason, a highly respected pool instructor. She was a skillful and graceful player and, when it came to looks, she was an absolute knockout.

Joann's story is a most unusual one. The only instance I can recall of a player retiring from competition for 20+ years and then coming back very strong to the world of pool is Joe Balsis, who was one of the greatest ever juniors, but took a detour in life to join the Coast Guard and he then worked full time in the family meat business until he was 43. He then entered the pro pool scene, in which he'd ultimately find his way into the BCA Hall of Fame. Virtually every significant pro title Joe won came at age 43 or higher, and he even won a silver medal in 1980 at the PPPA World 14.1 Championships at age 59, losing to a 26 year old rising star named Mike Sigel.

Joe's success should be an inspiration for JoAnn. Wishing her luck in her comeback.

What a beauty JoAnn is! And a fabulous person to boot. So nice to see her swinging a cue again and entertaining people. JoAnn finished second in the Los Angeles Open 9-Ball Championship in 1993, losing to Peg Ledman in a close final match that was televised on ESPN. They were competing against a stacked field of the best 32 women players of that era. Her game was very similar to Jasmin Ouschan, with a powerful stroke, good eye and nerves of steel. JoAnn Mason could play some pool!

I'll say. The first time i saw her at the Roosevelt or whatever hotel it was across from MSG in 92/93 or so for the Straight Pool Championships, I was risking Stalking charges.

Very much enjoyed reading the article and watching her 1990 championship match. Wow! In that match, her shotmaker skill really showed...would love seeing her do well with a comeback.

It was the Hotel Pennsylvania, and yes, most guys could not keep their eyes off her, myself included:):):):). My oldest brother saw her a few months ago practicing at a White Plains, NY pool room- he, too commented on her looks, and her pool game, I almost forgot that part!
