D)

I have been focusing on my fundamentals a lot (got Mark Wilson's book and have rededicated myself to a better stroke.)

Also, I've been working on progressive drills -- not unlike your drills, but just more general. For example: cue ball and object ball are one diamond apart, pocket the ball in a corner and follow one diamond, two diamonds, three, etc.

I've also been practicing my break. I've been trying to take some power off to improve accuracy and control... I've had some success but not enough to make me happy.

So I've been practicing a lot, just haven't done the BU drills in a while.
Thanks for the update, and I hope Mark's book is helpful.

Please consider doing the exams and posting scores again. I look forward to seeing how much better you and others can do after dedicated practice.

Catch you later,
Dave

I just ran through the exam 1 for the first time on my 9' Gold Crown IV (still need to measure the pocket dimensions). I'm rocking the bottom of the list with a 53, which I have on video, but it certainly would feel odd sharing a video to prove beyond doubt that I have a lower score than all others have reported. Scoring a 2 on the slide drill did not help.
Have you done Exam II yet?

Please post your total score after completing both exams. Please also consider posting your videos. You might get some free advice from people who might watch. Also, it is interesting to see what gives different people trouble.

Catch you later,
Dave

PS: If you want some help with the stun drill, check out:

dr. dave: Doing the whole test is quite time-consuming. It's more fun to work on one or two drills, but the way you have it set up it would seem like cheating to update your total score after just working on a few of the components. Anyone could do a drill 10 times and get lucky once, then do the next drill a bunch of times until you get lucky with a high score and count that, etc. But I know I'd be more interested in working on the drills and posting scores if the model was set with more subgoals than it has currently.

Have you seen that German system called CheckBilliard, similar to your Billiard University? They have a smartphone app - that appears to be mostly web-based - which makes it easy to see the drills and enter your score. Then they charge for additional or more advanced instruction.

Lol I'm pretty sure my score was the sum of both exams. Wooden spoon is mine, all mine...
I hope we see a battle for the "wooden spoon" award (with videos). :grin-square:

Enjoy your reign while it lasts,
Dave

D) I've been working really hard on my fundamentals lately and working with Mark Wilson's book. I have been practicing some of the drills intermittently. I do think they have a lot of value, but I haven't dedicated my limited available practice time to running through the entire exam again. I want to do it again early this summer or late spring though.
Sounds good. Please post your scores (and videos) when you do. I look forward to seeing how much you can improve your score.

Catch you later,
Dave

That's not allowed. Each exam attempt or video must be complete and uninterrupted. For more info, see the BU Exam Instructions document.

But I know I'd be more interested in working on the drills and posting scores if the model was set with more subgoals than it has currently.
People can use the individual exam drills or groups of drills and our historical-log sheets (available on the BU Exam resource page) to structure their own practice routine and track PRs in each drill separately, but the official BU score and rating requires each of the two exams to be completed in a single run; although, each exam can be worked on and improved separately.

Have you seen that German system called CheckBilliard, similar to your Billiard University? They have a smartphone app - that appears to be mostly web-based - which makes it easy to see the drills and enter your score. Then they charge for additional or more advanced instruction.
I have not seen that yet. Thank you for mentioning it. I'll check it out.

We don't have an app yet (although, this is on our list of things to do), but all of the BU Exam documents are online and can be pulled up on any device. Also, we offer a spreadsheet file for record keeping and automatic scoring. Everything is free (except an official diploma and the instructional DVDs).

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions,
Dave

Many people who said they would post new or improved scores have not. I am curious to know why this is the case. Please respond.

The reason I haven't posted is:
A.) I still haven't found enough time to practice the exams.
B.) I am too embarrassed to post a low score.
C.) I don't think the exams are worth practicing.
D.) some other reason (if so, please explain).

Thanks,
Dave

A - Will be finishing up my leagues in the next month or so, I'll find it interesting how I do at the test without practicing them after a year. Also, the post listed for me in the score posts is incorrect, should be

Good luck. I'd also be interested to see how much better you could do if you practice with the Exams for a while. Regardless, please post scores again when you retry the exams.

Thank you for pointing this out. I've fixed it. I've also added a pocket throat measurement based on other Valley Table measurements in the Table Difficulty Factor (TDF) thread.

Catch you later,
Dave

I had some time by myself at the poolroom tonight and I had the scoresheets with me so I went throught exam 1 and exam 2 again. I scored a 63 on exam 1 and a 67 on exam 2 for a combined 130. This is an improvement on my last score and I felt like I left a lot out there in exam 1. I thought this was especially good since I hadn't been practicing these drills lately. It's definitely a complete test of your skills. I think the only drawback is that it's quite lengthy (took me just under 3 hrs to complete) and exhausting. It would probably go faster if I had a table at home that I could pre-mark the ball spots on.

Good job! I've added your new score to the list.

It goes much faster if you mark the table ahead of time and if you have somebody helping you. Regardless, we certainly don't recommend doing both exams back to back; although, most people average closer to 1 hour per exam.

Thank you for posting a new score. It is interesting to see how much people can improve over time and/or with practice.

Regards,
Dave

This may not be the right place, but it's hard to get around the older threads in my phone.

I just measured the TDF for my legacy home 7' table. According to the page, it comes out at .70. There are no 7' tables listed as being measured before.

However, the pocket angle is 134 deg, and at that point it's harder than a narrower mouthed table, as anything that hits that facing gets bobbled out at anything other than snail speed.

The pocket width at the shelf is 4.5", and except for some instances it plays like a tighter table (well put it like this, the only guarantee to pocket is to avoid the facing entirely, except 1-2 cases).

Did anyone ever come up with a pocket factor to account for this? Seems like I heard someone talking about this before...

FYI, I just posted your questions and my replies on the Table Difficulty Factor (TDF) thread. Please respond there.

Catch you later,

Wow this is pretty cool, thanks I will have to check this out.
If you do, please post your scores, both after early attempts, and after you practice with the exams over time. It is fun/interesting to see how people improve over time.

Catch you later,
Dave
