Billiards and hearing loss

Is it really hard to imagine that a sledgehammer break is loud and may disturb some people?

One of the ironies of hearing loss is that it can be accompanied by increased sensitivity to loud noises.

Noise damage is cumulative.

Certainly pool could contribute to it.

For some of us it's the noise of the cheering crowd...:D

But none of that addresses the question at hand:
"...possible that playing in pool halls for a long time (or just playing pool in general) can lead to hearing loss because of the noise?"

With preexisting condition/ PERHAPS, but I would say in those cases, a lot of other stimuli would exacerbate the pre-ex condition too.

Yeah...in certain situations, perhaps. Like when the loss can be attributed to something else:rolleyes:

I never stated that i believe pool is responsible for all of my hearing loss. I can tell you it certainly contributed to it. When i was younger, before i ever put a rifle to my shoulder or plugged in a guitar, break shots and very hard hit shots would make my ears ring.. I can tell you now that nothing sets of my ears like the sound of pool balls being hit. Being three or four feet way from a break shot is certainly close enough for your ears to absorb quite a lot of that energy before it disspates. I will state again, do i believe shooting pool will make you go deaf, no i do not. I certainly believe that the noise level of pool ball collisions is louder than most people think, because it happens so quickly. I would love to see some real world measurements on the actual decibel levels.

I would honestly guess that the music I play though my headphones while practicing causes more damage than the sound of cracking balls.

Cool story: your brain actually deafens you a little bit when it knows that a loud sound is impending.

Your brain learned to anticipate break shots.

My guess is yes.

Every so often when I hit the break exceptionally well my ears ring.

Anything that makes this happen cannot be good.

You were quoted as n example of a situation where the breaking might impact, not cause.

I would guess that the 25 years that i spent racing damaged my hearing far more than pool balls ever will. The nice thing is my tinnitus is so bad a hard break is just background noise now.

My job screwed my ears, and playing Carom no loud smashing of a pack of balls ever

Play Carom and don't work in machine shops if your worried about your ears! ;)

The topic: can the sound generated by pool balls' normal use...That is poppycock.

I am not sure what you are talking about. Do you have evidence that even suggests hearing loss can result from pool balls colliding? I dont think you do.

Coz it is coppypock.

When sound hurts one's ears, damage has been done.

Have I done dB sound checks, analyzed those, done a study and come to that conclusion? No.

At no point did anyone question the existence of symptoms...it is the cause of hearing loss we discuss.

Do you think it is possible that playing in pool halls for a long time (or just playing pool in general) can lead to hearing loss because of the noise? Has anyone ever recorded the decibel level of pool balls colliding. Break shots? I have slight tinnitus and have noticed that loud shots can really set my ears off ringing.

In Providence I do. They have a wanba be DJ running the Wednesday nite Tournaments.

What!?

I have a hearing loss and the clack of the break startles me from time to time. Usually when I'm playing in leagues or "serious" match, I turn my hearing aids off so I can block out everything...
