Billiards and Math

Apparently you don't know much about physics or billiards.

I do have lots of practice letting people work through my confusion and their confusion about physics or billiards.

Having a scientific discussion on a billiard forum should be semi regular. Advances in computers, technology and imaging is creating a new type of billiard generation. They know technology faster and better at younger ages.

What types of discussion did you think would help billiard table owners connect with their college bound family?

Most people can afford pool tables, but do they know what to say to promote them.

witnessed a probable situation tonight,
home team had the 8ball in the head corner shelf, opponent was justing to the left with one more near the foot,
looked good for the home team, even giving BIH, then oh' sh!t, Darwin showed up,
made the called pocket with an acknowledged miss calculation, finished a clutch long shot, tapped in the 8.

..at first, I was thinking of something else about the thread title.
It was along the lines of getting out in 9 frames within a strength of 25.5 exploiting 1,866 options...

2 things to say about billiards and math:

One day at my homeroom I met a player looking to play the local pro. He was ready and anxious to play. The local pro did not show,(he is a "moody" type), so I offered to stand in for cheap since he travelled from across the state for the meetup. He gave me 9-6 and the seven ball. I thought my chances were good until,.......
He ran 4 racks in a row, and I honestly think he missed on purpose to let me on the table. Gotta admit, I was impressed. It was like watching Efren play,.... any angle he went center pocket on the diamond table.
So, I got to talking to him since he was not only dead center in dropping balls, but he was making some really hard angle 2 & 3 cushion shots to evade my safety play. (At this point, I knew I was donating, so I chatted him up on his excellent ability.) He told me he was a Math Professor at a noteable college in the state, So I started inquiry about ball speed and angles. He smiled, and slowly leaked out a few "tidbits" that only a Math major would know. Needless to say: It was the BEST money I ever lost.
lol, what?

I like that he gave you a smile behind which was locked the secrets of billiards 😂

Two of the best banks players in the world are clearly secret math majors: Mullet Mathematics!!!

Just realized: I’m an English teacher. That explains why I’m so comfortable using side!

Billiards and math?

No

/Thread

Yes ;)

How far off center do you hit the CB, and when you hit it off center 1/16th of an inch what happens when it hit's the rail, when you hit 1/4" off center what happens when you hit the rail, 1/32"?, 1/2"?

What angle do you need to bank a ball, what happens when you compress the rail (shortens it), what happens if you slow roll a bank?

How hard do you have to hit it to play a safe?

And for your name :) When playing a carom, what do you use to determine where to hit the OB - tangent line ;)

All that is in fact math, it may be natural to some but, it doesn't change the fact that it is math.

i have actually made that 5-railer in a match, transposed two diamonds up from the starting position. you go close to the top right corner with left spin, 3rd rail hit will be fairly close to the left side pocket. unless the cloth isn't worn out too much there will be energy enough in the cue ball to land 1.5-2 diamonds from top left corner (and in my case on a dead combo). it's a good shot to know.

Is there a missing picture? I'd love to see the 5 railer in question.

Thanks,

It's not the "what" you talk about, it's the "how" you go about it...

I wasn't saying it wasn't, I was saying no to the whole thing, don't do math while billiarding,
Bvm did an article on it as well regard 3c players and systems
He's not a fan of doing math at the table either

Play by Feel for this guy

It is basically the same as the five-cushion shot towards the end of this (8 minute mark):

Yeah, I figured it out.

I've had pretty good luck with that shot actually.

Once you know what needs to happen and know where the balls need to be it's a fairly easy hit but making it in a match would be impressive.

really only advisable if there's a dead combo waiting at the other end and the jump shot is not possible. maybe there would be another scenario but i think for most cases it's a sellout

...pictures? of a code? for billiards?

mmm,
it's all i got,

well, 1 of,
2, 3, 4... 7 of the possible 1,866,
within the first universe...

To me, it would depend on the overall setup. If I get lucky and make it where's the CB going, will I get hooked on the next ball, will I sell out, etc. Chances are, it would be hit at a speed that would allow for contact and the best possible outcome to NOT sell out :)

It is basically the same as the five-cushion shot towards the end of this (8 minute mark):

That is the classical 5-rail shot where the CB does not change sidespin as it touches all 5 rails.

The one illustrated on page 1 does change the side spin direction.
