Billiards Champ Missing; Gambling Rumored

Billiards coach Chang Ming-hsiung, who has known Chen for 10 years, said he did not believe Chen was a gambler.

"Chen is a good girl, and the gambling allegations are rumors," he said.

He does not seem to know her that well. I have 1st hand knowledge that she is a gambler. Pool-wise anyway.

I hope she is well.

Hi Corey:

I am guessing he tried to protect the image of sport since he has been the secretary for the governing body in Taiwan.

I have been reading some of the news, here are some tidbits:

She is currently in US, safe and sound.

She co-invested a BBQ grill restaurant earlier in June. The place violated the laws due to inproper management, got 2 tickets and was forced to close in a month. The shareholders was looking for her for small losses. She had contacted them to re-insure their refunds.

Another news says that she would put all the trust to her friends. In World Cup last month, one of her friends got her into a bet on Brazil against France for a great amount of money. There have been different speculations. It seemed this is not the first time.

In Taiwan people are more connection based and less independant. Many odd things can happen. There are her fans who are gathering donations to get her back on her feet.

Jennifer is the first Asian female star who came to US and succesfully made her name. She has been the role model for many younger players overseas. There could be times one gets confused which his/her goals in life. I wish she can recover to the right track and re-gain her game.

I hope so too, Wei.

If she lost a ton of $$ betting on baseball, she must be a SF Giants fan.

Seriously, I doubt she is in hiding from gambling debts. Seems like she does real well as a pool player, actress, and celebrity back home. Reminds me of the whole Rafael Martinez rumour fiasco...

Wasn't the same thing said about SANG LEE before he died?!?!

Something like he went into hiding for a while or something like that?

Being the cheap old scots-irish/yankee that I am, it totally baffles me how somebody can gamble themselves into that much trouble. I knew a person who has, but it still baffles me. I've got to believe a gambling addiction can be as destructive to a life as an alcohol or drug addiction.

Living in Vegas I've seen alot of destitute people that gambled there life savings away and can't even get back home.... I've gotten alot of out of the car trunk deals though...;)

9BG,
No. After her stellar performance last year, many of us were disappointed at her absence this year.
Oh. I thought it was her pictured with Jenn Barretta during her baby shower. I hope she's well and can get out of it.

I knew a guy whose parents retired with 800K

Every other day they were on the bus to AC.

The son tried to intervene when they were down to 500K, 400K, 200K etc. It was always " it's our only fun son, we really enjoy it".

It took less than 18 months to blow every cent of their savings. From sitting pretty to dead busted living 100% on social security just like that.

Sad, very sad.

Have a friend who work for the Del Webb High Sierra Casino & Hotel in South Lake Tahoe He was one of the floor manager type/customer service guy.

He would routinely almost every week take some customers to the Greyhound and put that person on the Bus with a Box Lunch, also when the customer was at his destination arrangement had been made with a local Cab Co. To get the person to their home. Reason was they had lost all their money, hocked their car, jewelry etc. They were busted.

He said he lost count of how many came to South Lake in a 20K Auto, and went home on a 500K Bus. He no longer works in the Casino, as he went into Law Enforcement, as he got tired of seeing folk loose it all for the chance at riches, that never happened to most.

I wonder if the Mobsters will send Chuck Norris to collect?

This is pure speculation but reading between the lines -it sounds as if they already tried to be 'partners' in her business to keep an eye on the cash flow.

I have an uncle who lives in Minnesota where the indians own casinos. He said the indians own a lot of farms now up there, and a lot of former farmers are busted and living in town.

As far as the Chen story goes, the Chinese mob must be nicer than the gangsters around here. I don't think you would get to the point where you owed these St Louis boys 600k.

There are a million stories like that. There is at least one the other way, though. Archie Karras took a borrowed $10,000 stake to Vegas and, in one of gambling's all time best rushes, turned it into better than $17 million.

I am not trying to make enemies, but if ever there were a thread that maybe should be left to die, this is it. This isn't on the same level of blowing someone's action, or even reporting a huge gambling score that the IRS might see.

This is about someone who's possibly gotten into trouble - the worst kind of trouble - and no one here can help. I think all we can do is make it worse.

Just my opinion... hope no one takes offense.

There are similarities, both of them came from Asia and tried to establish themselves here.

Sang came just a little earlier and stood all the way till his late years. He has really made some accomplishments: US National Champion in 12 consecutive years and raise the standards for the sport. For more details, you can read an article by one of his close friend and student here:

Sang Chun Lee: His Life in Billiards by Ira Lee

I had the honor to meet him several times. He is really a genuine, insightful and charming person. I could still see the Chow Yun-Fat like image as he walked in Carom Cafe to teach one last lesson to Ira, on a late late Tuesday night. That was the last time I saw him and I will always remember it.

The next time you go to Vegas (or any other location with Casinos for that matter), and you've just pulled some money out of your pocket to put into a machine or buy chips, stop for just a second and take a look around:

Look at the millions of lights, the plush carpet, the chrome plating, the uniformed attendants, the waitresses constantly serving drinks, the huge restaurants, bars and night clubs, the multi-story flourescent signs and the giant color video displays.

Then look down at the money in your hand and reflect on the fact that everything you just saw was paid for with money just like yours that someone else just like you voluntarily took out of their pocket and put in a machine or placed on a table.

BTW - Best of luck to Ms. Chen. If she is really in the kind of trouble reported, she will need it.

BTW2 - Didn't Alex Pagulayan get in similar trouble a few years ago? I recall hearing that after winning the World Championships Mr. Pagulayan said the first thing he'd be doing with his prize monies was to pay off his gambling debts. Made me wonder what he would have done if he hadn't won.

He lost some 1 million pesos ( around 20K ) to Dennis Orcullo or Ronnie Alcano supposedly.
