Ronnie Allen beat Danny Diliberto in Phoenix, IIRC.

Robert, you must know that back in the 40's and 50's when Mosconi was winning all those "World Championships", many times it was a long challenge match against one player. Just ask Shamos, he knows all about it. So does your namesake Byrne.

I'm fully aware of such championship challenge matches, Jay, and have been for many years. Mike Shamos covered Thomas Heuston's career in a recent BD, and many of his championships were won either as defenses of or challenges for the crown. Those challenges were normally based on the results of previous tournaments, with the top few finishers having the first right to issue a challenge. There was a continuing organization of tournaments and challenges, and if the champ held the crown for a certain time, he got to keep the trophy and a new one was made.

But all that doesn't seem to apply at all to the "championship" we're talking about. Was there some background to it I missed?

honestly, in this splintered world of pool that fights with spelling bees for tv recognition, who cares what a writer for a mag that you can only buy in pool rooms says.

No, it would be GREAT if people COULD buy BD in the poolroom. But 9 out of 10 pool rooms don't sell it, P&B or Inside Pool.

ok. so then NO ONE reads bd except a few from azb.

Interesting

That brings up an interesting question. I wonder what the total distribution is for BD and the others.

roughly about 20,000 subscribers for BD.
about the same for P&B and I think IP is somewhere up there too

As far as Ronnie's match with Danny, we called it the "World One Pocket Challenge Match". So it was distinctly a "challenge" match as opposed to any kind of World Championship. An important distinction I believe.

Ronnie was widely regarded back then as the best One Pocket player in the world, pre Efren. And Danny was a worthy challenger. They played on a beautiful Anniversary table in Danny's home room, The Golden Cue in Phoenix. Danny was the house pro there and played on that table every day.

And it was a marathon, stretching over three days. They played three out of five sets, each set a Race To Five. And it went the distance, well over ten hours of high speed One Pocket. I currently offer a single DVD edited version of the match, featuring all the best moments and interviews with both players. It is two hours and forty minutes long.

Both players played good! I watched the whole thing. I don't know if anyone could have beaten either of these guys that weekend. By the way, I was the promoter of this match and arranged the filming as well.

My apologies for the misinformation. At the time, I thought is was presented as a World Championship.

There are alot of world championship events out there. But I think 10-ball deserves one cause its a better game than 9-Ball and looks like only a matter of time before it overtakes 9-ball one day

I think 96 players showing up in FL proves that its a great title and Shane in my book is the World 10-Ball CHamp!

Filming?

Jay, are you saying that you have videos of that match in Phoenix? I would love to see it. Im from the area, never got a chance to get to that place, but I have heard lots of stories.

Well said. i have to agree with you totally. We do need more tournaments. However i still believe in my heart we really need a good solid mens tour. I fear without it well never get pool where it should be among other pro sports.

Actually, I'd like to take issue with your statement. It's been my experience that NONE of the national billiard magazines are willing to go the extra mile to give the sport better coverage and write positive articles about those organizations/corporations that aren't part of their adverstising base. It's only the smaller players who really care.

Case in point, I sent the following email to ALL the magazine editors, expressing my thoughts on this very subject. The only ones kind enough to even respond were Sandy Schuman of 'Inside English' and Paul Frankel of 'Professor Q-Ball'. And to be fair, 'On the Wire' was left off the solicitation and this rant does not apply to them or the other regional mags. But again, the only thing I heard from the national pool magazines after sending this email, was more follow-up calls from their ad sales staff asking if we wanted to purchase more ad space.

Attention Billiard Magazine Editors and Website Content Contributors:

On 8/23/07, PoolTees held an exciting event at the APA National Team Championships in Las Vegas. You can read more about it and watch the video here, http://www.pooltees.com/videos/videolinks.htm.

As evidenced by the video, the event was huge success. We (PoolTees) were able to bring originality and excitement to an otherwise generic Poolapalooza party. We believe it's important that these sorts of events are broadcast to the remainder of the billiards community, outside of those lucky few who attended the event. Having the confidence that we (PoolTees and the APA - representing the Billiards Merchandise and Billiards Event industry) will receive appropriate coverage after undertaking such events, enables us to plan and budget for similar billiard promotional events in the future.

The status quo, of offering write-ups for frequent advertisers only, both limits the flow of information to the billiards community and also puts smaller and newer industry upstarts, such as us, in the unfair position of having to prematurely budget highly coveted advertising dollars.

That being said, we'd like to ask that you run an article in upcoming issues/publications/postings regarding our event. The coverage will both add substance to otherwise standard articles and hopefully inspire other companies and organizations to put together more ambitious billiards events in the future. Each of us are responsible for doing what we can to promote the sport when and where we can. Remember, a rising tide lifts all ships.

So please give it some thought and let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks for listening!

Again, zero responses from the national pool magazines, exept random solicitions from their ad sales departments that didn't even make mention of the email. Therefore its safe to assume it never got more thought than a swift deletion from the inbox of the magazine heads.
