Billiards on ESPN

I bought my fiancee' a Tivo for Christmas. This is the first thing that was programmed into it ;)

Remember when there used to be men's tournaments on tv? Pool is in bad shape right now, it's such a shame.

I think me and Tivo are going to have a lovely relationship. I set it to record all billiards shows on any channel at any time. Somewhere down the line I will get the one where Jeanette Lee shows her "zoned out" stroke. That one is something special. I have yet to see any tournament on television capture something close to that.

I was amazed watching Oliver Ortmann on ESPN back years ago. It was pretty even about 10 years ago on male/female billiards.

Tivo is the bomb. Once you have it, there's no going back.

I was really iffy on getting it because it's useless without a subscription, but I have grown to love it.

I do like watching the women but i prefer the men's tournaments. I like the old schools guys that had a ton of personality. Sigel, Mataya, Varner, Strickland and Hall. A lot of the men's players now are like robots...a ton of techique and no flare.

Oliver Ortmann is most certainly a robot when it comes to pool, but that is his flare if you've ever seen him shoot 14.1.

I have mine set also for billiards, but nothing has been on for awhile on the ESPN classics, usually there's something on every morning. Sometimes they have the classic billiards on with Lassiter,Mosconi,Irving Crane,etc...and it doesn't record them.

I don't want to see Speed Pool and 7 Ball tournaments. I wish ESPN would get it together.

LOL,I saw one from a decade ago with Ralph Souquet,he had hair and a little mustache,he looked like a completely different person. Awesome pool player!

I don't get classic anymore
You're right nothing has been on in about 3 weeks

I'm sorry Gunzby,I was talking about Ralph, althought Ortmann is a great player also, but he has always had hair, I believe. Thank's for the link with Steve and Oliver, watching it now.

Yea I don't remember seeing Ortmann with a mustache, but then again I've been away from the game for 10 years even if I watched it on tv anytime I was flipping.

LoL I bet Ralph looks a lil funny with a mustache though. As soon as I read your post I imagined him in a yellow rain coat for some reason

Mitch does a much better job these days. I just wish he wouldn't ALWAYS say "The Striking Viking, Ewa Mataya Laurence". That Striking Viking stuff sure gets old after a while. I bet she hates it too. It's a nickname, not her real name. Why couldn't he just call her Ewa Laurence or Ewa Mataya Laurence or even say "my wife" once in a while. Don't you think people wonder about their relationship having the same last name. It's like he wants to keep that a secret. It might be fun if they teased each other a little bit on the air.

Someone needs to tell him there is nothing wrong with introducing her as "My lovely wife Ewa!" Striking Viking works exactly one time, and then it gets real old fast. Hey Mitch we can see she's good looking. It's not necessary to remind us every two minutes that she's "Striking".
