Billiards on Wii

I read an interesting article somewhere (can't remember) where Nick van den Berg stated he played well when he won a recent tournament on the Eurotour, and he attributed a little bit of his recent win to his playing online billiards.

I know Nick posts on AzBilliards sometimes, but here is his blog at OnlinePool.com: http://nick-van-den-berg.online-pool.com/

I downloaded the online pool game and couldn't figure it out. I read the instructions and watched a few games, but I am thinking it takes patience to figure out how to do it well on a computer.

Here's a YouTube link to a Wii pool game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL6TkHLfgoQ&feature=related

I can see where playing online pool would help you acquire an understanding for applying english, et cetera. Maybe these online pool games are helpful in providing strategies to the game of pool.

Here's an interesting blog from England where a poster is asking about an upcoming Wii pool game coming out this year, and the responses to him were generally why not go out and play the game on a real pool table: http://www.eurogamer.net/forum_thread_posts.php?thread_id=117290&start=0

With the Internet technology being so prominent in our lives today, it does not surprise me to see that there are MANY online pool games in existence. I find it interesting that Nick, who is a great player on a real table, is also a great player in online pool games.

Has anybody tried their hand at online pool? If so, what do you think? :)

The "Wii Play" DVD has the pool game on it. My family plays many things on Wii and pool is not one of them. The game is is difficult to use compared to the real deal. The angles and the rebound of the CB are OK. In my opinion there is very little to learn and even less fun. That is why it doesn't get used by young or old.

Bowling, Golf, race car driving, dancing, and some adventure games in that order seem to attract the most use.

Wii is one of several diversions at our house for the non-pool playing family members and others who show up at our round robin tournaments.

I have tried other CD based pool games, one was fairly expensive, and these games are not interesting. It would probably surprise some people to learn how much the allure of pool is related to being there with a cue stick in hand.

I think that the CD based games appeal to people who do not have access to a table.

Computer-based pool can be amusing, but they all suffer from the same flaw - people trying to program in the physics. No one ever gets it all right.

I'd bet that real golfers say the same things about the "Golden Tee" arcade games you find in practically every bar these days.

I played around with the pool game in "Grand Theft Auto 4" - fun, but nowhere near the real thing.

not so good...

I had Wii Pool for a couple weeks. The fiance and I tried several times to play it and just couldn't get into it...believe me, we really wanted to like it. Difficult to control the cue, cue ball...pretty much everything.

I haven't tried the Wii pool, but I did try the online pool one time. They were giving away seats to the WSOP for those who won the online pool tournaments.

I came, I tried, and I left. I just couldn't learn how to hit the ball properly with the right amount of speed. I didn't even get as far as applying english. :o

The man is phenomenal, on the computer and on a field of green, when it comes to pool!

this one is kind of fun

JAM,

I am finding the game linked to below very entertaining. It is eightball but with only a very anemic break available and some odd rules. No english that I have found either so everything is speed and angles and breaking up the stack. I would think straight pool players would find it very helpful working with strategy.

The physics aren't really right but they are simple. What is funniest and perhaps what keeps my interest is that you can play the computer and it plays like everything from a banger to better than any human in the world. It will stall when it is programmed to think it is time for the player to win one and it will play impossibly well when it believes that it is time for the computer to win. Winning single games is super easy. Trying to win a half-dozen or more in a row becomes very tough.

It doesn't begin to replace a real table but when looking for a time killer on the computer it ain't bad. I haven't played it long and I'm sure I'll tire of it soon. Part of the fascination is that the software seems to be adaptive and I find that interesting from a former IT professional's standpoint.

PS I'll bet that Keith can't win ten games in a row!

Agreed. Wii pool blows. Its extremely difficult to control and the physics suck. Will bowling and Wii tennis kick ass though.

Custom Cue Handle for the Wii!

Found a YouTube vid featuring
a guy who made a custom cue handle
for the Wii remote.

I'm giving him an A for effort. :)

Hope you like the video, friends!
Much thanks for looking, everyone!

Link is here!

I have tried a bunch of different online pool games over the years. Even lame ones like Yahoo's. The only 1 that is kind of close with the correct effects of whitey is play89.com. And it's definitely not perfect.

And I don't think it's that much of a wonder why people who play really well on the real table can play well online. Most of the people on these sites don't know correct patterns, safeties, etc.

I made a few hundred bucks on this site so far. But you can play for free as well. (Make sure you use a mouse instead of the laptop pad).

I love Wii Tennis! And I kid you not!

I agree with the above posts, we got a Wii for Christmas this year and I was looking forward to the pool game but it is difficult to use and not much fun.

wii pool sucks, yahoo pool looks a little better, but pool stars as shown in the video actually looks pretty decently implemented if you can really do masse and jump shots!

real pool sucks, i made an awesome bank shot but accidently pocketed one of the computers balls so the computer got a "free shot" as in they dont get ball in hand but can shoot again even if they miss

im going to have to download poolstars ..
