Bisecting the angle rule?

I was playing pool last weekend with another regular at the pool hall. He left me a kick shot to get out. I began to eyeball the shot using the mirror system when he began to shout it was illegal to bisect an angle by the rules(presumably using a cue stick)--well I wasn't bisecting anything just guestimating the mirrored ball's position on the rail. (I made the shot and finished out).

Has anyone ever heard of such a rule or is my acquaintance just misinformed (taking the high road here, lol)? I surely do not want to cheat anyone but I've played in all the local leagues and have never heard of this, so thoughts anyone?

He's nuts, totally.

I remember hearing a rule in league years ago that stated you could use your cue to bisect an angle but you could not mark your target on the rail with the chalk on your cuetip. I have no idea if there's any truth to it, but it makes sense to me.

Sharking

I believe your opponent was attempting to shark you! NO such rule. Marking the spot though would be illegal as well as letting go of the cue if you did that..

You must keep your hand on your cue the whole time you are measuring things out. You can't lay it on the table in the general angle to the target ball and then walk over to where the cueball is see how close your angles are.

Also as someone else mentioned you can't mark the rail or place a piece of chalk on the rail at the rail contact location or that is a foul.

I agree this is the correct answer.

As others have pointed out, it is illegal to mark the table, but I guess you weren't doing that.

There is also a rule in some sets of rules that it is illegal to place your cue stick on the table while lining up a shot if you take your hand off it. In my view, this rule is broken because the player gets no unfair advantage from that, and the cue is guaranteed to be off the table when he shoots. But, that's the rule.

keeping your hand on the cue while your measuring? i have never seen a rule that says that, that sounds crazy to me too

SAME THING ONLY DIFFERENT- In our 9-ball league coaching is allowed. A
girl needed coaching for such a kick. Her coach (STRONG local player) gave her verbal advice ( we can't point or mark anything on table) then stood 4 1/2 feet from the corner pocket casually 'holding the pin" (his cue stick upright) as a sighting target as she kicked to a ball hanging in the opposite corner. Slick move. Worked great. Fly on the wall - on a stick. We protested -too late-successful kick worked- she won game. If it happens again we are to go get TD b4 shot. Thanks for nothing.

Correct. Your cue is the only allowed measuring device and must be held in your hand. See Rules 3.42 and 3.43 from World Stanardized Rules below.

3.42 DEVICES
Players are not allowed to use a ball, the triangle or any other width-measuring device to see if the cue ball or an object ball would travel through a gap, etc. Only the cue stick may be used as an aid to judge gaps or as an aid to aligning a shot., so long as the cue is held by the hand. To do so otherwise is a foul and unsportsmanlike conduct. (Also see Rules 1.3, 1.4 and 2.15)

3.43 ILLEGAL MARKING
If a player intentionally marks the table in any way (including the placement of chalk) to assist in executing the shot, it is a foul.

Thanks for all of the information and responses! I found it interesting to read and learn from the standardized rules and I have gained some insight into my opponent! For the record, I neither laid my cue down nor marked the cushion with a chalk smudge--the mirrored ball was well into the formica. Thanks again for the information!

I'm really fed up with people saying "this is the rule" or "that is the rule" and they are TOTALLY WRONG!

But lately I have a good solution for this...

I say "Show me the rule!", "Show me where it says that!"

That shuts them up with a quickness.

Note that I carry around a BCA rule book which has the *real* rules in it. So I can always get this book and point to the actual rule.

(I bought an extra copy and left it at my local P.H.)
