Ethyl alcohol is ethanol and is the stuff you drink except in 196 proof--one can obtain 200 proof ethanol from laboratory grade suppliers.

Denatured alcohol is Methanol also known as race gas for Indy cars until the mid 2010s.

On a dry erase board, if someone uses a sharpie, they say to go over the spot with the dry erase marker and then wipe it off.
I tried this today and it worked great. You must completely cover the permanent marker with the dry eraser then wipe off. Thanks a buch!

Actually, "denatured" is Ethyl/ Ethanol doctored at the factory with a slug of Methanol & sometimes other aromatic hydrocarbons so alkies don't buy it to drink and avoid the Fed & state taxes on liquor. (Methanol will make you blind, among other potential debilitations).

Ethanol/ Denatured is sold as camp stove fuel in the hardware store.

However, if lacquer thinner did not work, the EtOH probably won't either.

I have a few shafts that the previous owner put black perm. marker on the shafts to mark the grain, does anyone know a
good way to get the black marks off the shaft without hurting the shaft. Thanks in advance for your comments.

WD-40 takes sharpie off of just about everything but it might stain the wood

You might try a magic eraser or lighter fluid on a paper towel. These have worked for me when nothing else would.
Denatured alcohol on a magic eraser will definitely get it. However, don’t ever use this combination to clean the butt of your cue, as it will permanently dull the high-gloss poly finish in a heartbeat. I found this out the hard way trying remove sticker gummy stuff off the butt of a cue.

Most hardware stores carry denatured alcohol - clean burning fuel for alcohol stoves, in pint and quart cans.

I had a crazy gf write how much of an ahole I was all over the mirrors in the house with a sharpie. I tried alcohol because I had it handy. No dice. Nail polish remover took it off.
That is some funny reading. Reminds us to know the chemicals and maybe select girlfriends more carefully, though it's admittedly a crapshoot.

Funny. I take permanent marker off of shelf tags every day I work. What works best is spray sunscreen. I use the stuff from Trader Joe’s in the blue can. Works like a champ, no bullshit.
