BlackJack & Committee Meetings

one of the things BlackJack told me on the phone this past weekend is, when getting down on a shot, dont clutter your mind with all kinds of thoughts. in other words, have your mind made up when you step into the shot. dont be thinking of ten different things when you are over the shot - in other words, no Committee Meetings going on in your mind at this point.

this shot was a classic example of what a Committee Meeting is all about. when i stood over this shot all i wanted to do was follow up about a foot to Point B, and leave an angle to come down for the '7' Ball. here is what i was thinking over the shot:
1) Are you aligned straight here?
2) No, wait, should i move the cue this way by 1/8 inch?
3) Be sure and dont follow too far.
4) Be sure and dont leave it too short also.
5) Now, am i sure i have this shot aligned?
6) Make sure i stroke this shot straight

and, what happened? i missed the '5' Ball, cutting it just slightly to the left. instead of just letting go and trusting my alignment, stroke, mechanics, etc, i thought of a bunch of diffierent things - and missed.

If you would just read the book that I mentioned to you three times in the past (4 now) you wouldnt have needed someone else to tell you this... Like someone mentioned in the DCP 4-Ball thread. We offer advice, but you seem to ignore it.

You game is not a physical problem. Posting diagrams of shots you missed is not going to help you, most of the time you know what you did wrong on the shot and how to fix it, physically. Mentally, your game is a mess and gets worse with each negative post on here.

You psyche yourself out before you even get in you car to head to the poolhall.

"Pleasures of Small Motions"

It does wonders for your mental game, teaches you how to focus correctly and what to focus on. It teaches you how to train, not what to train. Teaches about concious shots and unconscious shots and how to make the concious shots, unconscious. Teaches you what should be on your mind when on a shot, how to think in competition.

Basically, its a miracle book.

I ordered it from Amazon.com, read the reviews there. It's fantastic.

Its not a tough read either, its a good read.

Pleasures of small motions...great book, but I don't agree on everything that is there. Specifically, after reading it I got the feeling that author wanted players/readers to be aware of their level of skill all the time without exception. Not sure if that's such a bright idea if player wants to seriously improve. Yes, we all think we are better than we really are, BUT...even in competitive matches you have to go for runouts that may be slightly beyond your level of skill. Obviously one should not try to runout if there are several clusters. If you always play well within your limits, you might have more immediate success...but in the long term you're not going to improve your game too much.
I don't think it's the right book if one wants to become a runout machine. In fact, the book for such players may not exist at all. The author simply isn't a player at that level, so there's no way he could possibly know what goes on in pro player's heads.
