make sure your prepped and perfect for the application of the finish after staining........if you go through the finish sanding your going to have a tough time matching the stain back without stripping the finish off........

Blow the wood off to get any dust particles out the pores and use an alcohol or a some sort of degreaser prior to applying the stain so you don't have any oils, waxes or whatever on the surface of the wood that will negatively effect its consistency and depth of color.

Blue Stain

From my experience, food coloring does an excellent job when blue is the required color.
This product can be used straight out of the bottle, or diluted with a bit of water depending on how dark you want the finish. It has a semi transparent effect to it, that really highlights any figuring in the maple.
Also, I have not had any issues, such as fish eye, etc. when applying clear coat either.

Staining can cause lots of problems. Be sure you have a dark ring where the stained wood meets the adjacent wood, so the color doesn't bleed. Also be careful when sanding between coats of clear. If you sand through the clear, you will have a white spot, that may or may not accept stain a 2nd time. I also think that spraying the clear, is the only way that will work, over stained wood...JER

Is it possible to stain the handle prior to assembly? Is there a stain that would allow me to stain a forearm prior to cutting point grooves?
