I saw a do-it-yourself book for $14.95 but now I can't remember where I saw it.

Could have been Inside Pool magazine. Does anyone know where a book such as this can be found?

Also, I am looking for something under $500 to aid in installing cue tips.

Thanks in advance. WW

for under 500 a williard works well, usually can be found for 3-4, lathe is a better option but usually more than 500.

Install tip

A heavy rubber band and some proper glue can install a tip. Let the tip set overnight without moving anything for a proper set.

You need something to trim the sides of the tip flush after installation, like a Proper Mushroom Graser (7100) tool ($19.95 on website) - which I own and works great.

I think the installing is the easy part....its the removal of the old tip thats difficult to do correctly. Cleaning of the old tip and glue and squaring up the end.

Any suggestions on how a home tipster does this without a lathe?

"I missed the shot.. but look at that shape!"

Thanks! That's the one I saw.

PS

My wife wants to try every tip know to man, and I would like to stop chasing people around trying to get a damn tip put on :D .

Not going into detail, but you are lying about me on two accounts 1)trying every tip known to man vs the truth (M and H from 2 companies)

2)You have not chased anyone around, but told me to get the tip on my cue I wanted one on at 'such and such pool hall' by 'so and so'.

Geez. Wonder what else has been stated about me since I left AZ a year ago. I miss lots of people here, but do not miss posts like the above!!!

WW, I am in Leesburg and will put a tip on for you anytime. I have a lathe and do excellant work. I will change them for free until we find what Laura likes. Give me a call. Maybe do one today.

Another thought - I urge you to seek out a local cuemaker or repair guy in your area rather than attempting to do it yourself. The best tips today are oversize and have to be trimmed to even with the ferrule. Without a lathe it is very difficult to do this properly. Even with a lathe it isn't so easy. A Sniper tip, for example, can be installed improperly even by an experienced person with a lathe.

For example, I took a Sniper tip to my local cuemaker. He had never installed one before. Fortunately, I had copied a Varney post on AzB on how to do it and showed it to him. He wasn't insulted and read it carefully. Then he installed it and did a good job. Afterwards he said that he had installed hundreds of Moori's with no problems but that installing the Sniper was much trickier.

I can understand wanting to do it yourself. After all, who cares about your cue more than you do? I'd like to do it myself also, but I just can't justify the cost of a lathe for putting on the occasional tip. If you want to go into the business that's another matter. But then you would need a lathe for sure.

Thanks a ton Rich for the book review and the difficulties of putting on tips. This leaves me back at ground zero, which I never thought that I would go higher anyway. Now it is time to think outside the box and try to find something besides an expensive lathe to use. My wife has some extra cue sticks that we can play around with.

Glad I could help. Believe me...I destroyed more than a few before I learned the trick.:D
