Hey guys , I've never played much straight pool but I just started it recently for practice mostly. I quickly realized how little I know about straight pool patterns. I guess years of playing nine ball have ruined me. Is there any books or video's you guys would suggest to help?Thanks

I think some of the best pattern play I have seen is from Jim Rempe. While I enjoy watching some of the other guys more, I think Rempe's pattern play is second to none. His end patterns are super tight (by that I mean very little cue ball movement) and flow very logically. You can tell he approaches a layout like a chess player, every shot has some bearing on the end result, and when he moves in for the break ball, its just beautiful to watch. To me thats the right 14.1 "theory", your short term goals should be in concert with your long term goals in the rack, and Rempe does it scarily well.

Thanks guys , A friend of mine loaned me the phill capele book. I'm gonna read on it some and then I might get some of these video's some of you have mentioned. Thanks guys.

Books are great, but you need to watch the great players play to really learn the game. I would suggest going to Amsterdams in New York on a Saturday and watching some of thoses straight pool contests.

I got the "How To Run a Rack" video from AccuStats - it was good, but could have been better. Really I got more info about breakshots from that video than anything else. I do like the drill he presents in it though.
What I want is a video that goes into great detail about the right and wrong ways to run balls. I want to see the balls from an overhead view so I know what the angles are like, and have diagrams overlayed on the table with explainations about why one pattern is better than another..
Anything like that around?

Just kidding. I'd like to see something like that too. You could check out some of the videos people submitted to Blackjack for commentary. It's nice to see the mistakes mortals make, and then have them explained.

John schmidts tape is really cool to watch. the problem is he just has so much talent that i don't think it's a great teaching tool unless you already play fairly strong already. a couple of times he gets out of line and makes a great recovery shot that i know i'd never make
