I used to play a game with my grandfather in his basement called bottle pool. It used a wood bottle that the neck was shaped so a ball could roll past easy and 2 balls. Out of everybody i've asked nobody has heard of this game. Do any of the old timers on here know of it? and if so, does anybody know where a guy could get one of those old bottles?? I've tried to play it with the pill bottles but its just not the same.

Bottle Pool

Hi there:

I used to play a bottle pool game with my dad way back when at home. I think the bottle went in the middle of the table and the one and two balls were spotted on the head and foot sports. Points were made by caroms and/or knocking the bottle down. Here's a link to a bottle like the one we used:

I'd like to hear if this sounds like a game anyone else has played...it's been a long time!

Played it also

I grew up in Mass, and we used to play it quite often back in the late 60's. It has been discussed here before so you may be able to find out more by doing a search..

i looked up some pill bottles on line and they arent quite shaped like many years ago. the ones we used tended to have a more elongated neck. the hole or opening at the neck had a little larger base diameter than the neck itself, which gave the bottle a bit of a sturdier stance when inverted. the distance from the neck base (opening) to the beginning curvature of the base (fat part) was about 2 or 3 inches. we played on a snooker table so the balls being slightly smaller could pass closer to the neck without knocking over the bottle. gerald

Played it. In fact, I once got in an argument with a guy about the rules. He was actually referring to Bottle Billiards played on a Carom table.

The bottle I remember from the '60's was red plastic and had a much longer and thinner neck than current bottles.

I had a group of guys over the other night and we played some bottle pool. Not too many games out there that are tolerable to play with 5 or 6 guys, IMHO.

These are made for bottle pool unlike the previous link. That one has no lip on the top of the bottle.

On my linked pages, you will also find an additional link to buy the rule book.

This is how we play 9-ball ring games. We use a beer bottle and if you hit it it costs you 5 dollars.

I played a lot of bottle pool back in the 1950's and 60's and never saw a wood bottle. I saw wooden mushrooms. Johnnyt

my grandfather was a woodworker so he may have turned the bottle himself. The pill bottles just are not the same to play with, there so easy to knock over!!!...that old hollow wood bottle with the ball shaped neck was almost impossible to hit over unless you hit it dead on!!!..glad to hear others have played on here too though.

A variation of that game might be what some call Alabama Pool. The 8 Ball is set on top of a new chalk and can't be knocked off or you lose. When all of one player's balls are pocketed the 8 Ball is removed from the chalk to be shot.

Over the years I have played many games using a bottle in one way or an other. The strangest Game I have seen is on a 8 ft Carom table using Steel Pins as targets to knock over after a carom. I have also been in a Take off of an English Pub that had several wall type machines which where Billiard type games that use a cue stick. Wonders never end as to the number of variation of pool.

The game i'm reffering to used 1 bottle and 2 balls. its a point game. 1 for sinking a ball, 2 for a billiard with the balls, and 3 for a billiard using the bottle. as long as you score you keep shooting and stop when you want, if you don't stop and fail to score you lose all points for that round. If you go over 31 points total you drop down to 0. if you knocked the bottle into a pocket or off the table you lose all your points. and after knocking the bottle down it gets put back up where it lands. There is more too it, but my fingers hurt from typing now.

Bottle Pool and Kelly Pool, or Pill Pool, are two different games and both are in the BCA Rule Book if memory serves.
