Bowling has Denny's. Why not pool?

mc donalds - wendy's - burger king would be good candidates as pool sponsors. does any of the pool organ's have full time people in marketing? if not why not?

I can't speak for who is out there lobbying for pool sponsors right now, but I hope to one day help out on that front. It takes a lot to get a big company to pony up that kind of money! And they will need experienced sponsorship salespeople to do so. But the fact of the matter is, one of these national pool tour ventures needs to succeed first!

Wow...you must not get out much! :D Sonic is a mainstream national fast food chain, with stores in more than 28 states! Not only that, but the food is 10X better than "Awful Waffle"...what a gut bomb. Unfortunately they're on almost every corner in the south.

I will have to respectfully disagree with you here Scott. The Waffle House is a great American establishment that is the lifeblood for millions of characters in the south. Granted, most of them are unsavory and have never had a 2 star meal much less a 5 star meal. Having gone to college for 8 years to get a 4 year degree and being a former alcoholic that blacked out 3 times a week, I can tell you that there is nothing better than banging a skank that you brought home from a bar and then making her take you to Waffle House on a random Tuesday night. Then, after eating a double order of hashbrowns scattered, covered, chunked, and topped with Bert's Chilli, all while almost getting kicked out but never quite getting in trouble with the toothless night shift wait staff, making her ugly ass pay for the meal. Waffle House really is great even if you cant remember eating there.

Well see, Corvette...you've only eaten there when you were "plowed"! :D That dulls your senses (including sense of taste!). They may be 'an American institution', but their food still stinks, imo!

Of course they market, but they market for their own individual sanctioned parties. If they were to join, a lot of somebodies will lose a lot of money. Somehow I doubt they will willingly part with their piece of the pie. Also, why not think more along the lines of a Hooters,TGI Fridays, etc. Think national chain nightlife sponsors- they would fit better with the typical pool tour demograph. Wow, my head hurts. I haven't had a train of thought like that in a while....feels like brain freeze.

Well, I always thought that Wrangler Jeans would be a great sponsor to promote "One Pocket" ya know, one pocket - Jeans -- no? :)

Bowling has some excitement in short spans. Pool does not.

Bowling has a way of seperating the Pros from the nots. Pool doesnt have a clear cut way. One persons A player might be considered a B by others.

Its easy to understand a good shot in bowling. Not so much in pool. Even people that play pool for 20 years have yet to figure out that getting on the correct side of the ball (even if only by a few inches) is the way to play.

Bowling has had many sponsors and most of its particapants have struggled throughout the years. However Lanes and other companies will
sponsor players openly and with no regrets. When is the last time the local business sponsored a pool player to go to a few events?

Bowling tours have the advantage of NEVER having to worry about finding a place to play. There are always large Centers that will have enough room. For a large pool event sponsors have to find a locaiton other than a Pool Hall for most Pro level events. Even when they do find a room that is big enough the layouts are never event friendly for spectators.

Bowlling has had to adjust and find ways to spark TV interest. Either this year or last year they started the challenges with trick shots kind of like horse in basketball. It works on TV and has been a big hit.
Pool trick shots are working in TV but arent combined with actual Pro players or events.

The only pool tour Waffle House is sponsoring is the "Get Robbed in Front of our Restaurant" tour for grizzled road dogs.

so whatever happened to Camel sponsoring the pool leagues?

From my understanding, they haven't done pool sponsorships since 2000. In general, the tobacco industry is shying away from sports sponsorships and major advertising, and now focusing on the politically correct anti-smoking campaigns as a goodwill effort. You don't see many tobacco sponsorships these days at all. (Hence, "Winston Cup" becomes "Nextel Cup")

Great post! were you aware that you can duplicate the "drunk/skank
act in almost any late night chain restaurant. I have taken my act to
many an upscale Denny's.

Sorry if this offends anyone but bowling is about as exciting as watching
paint dry. Research this thread and you'll find iodini is one of very few
people who are right on target. Pool, with the right mechanisms in place
will (one fine day) exceed bowling as a spectator sport.

I noticed on a bowling commercial the other day that Denny's restaurant chain sponsors one of their tours or tournaments. How come pool cant land a sponsor like Denny's? IT'S THE SAME EXACT DEMOGRAPHIC AS BOWLERS. And there's probably a lot more people in this country that play pool then bowl. Just a guess. Has this sort of sponsorhip been attempted before (i.e. by a non beer or cigarrette or billiard product company)? Are people who run the tours going after these sorts of advertisers?

Bowlers are held to a Strict Dress Code by Denny?s and the PBA, most pool players I see playing in local tournaments would fail the Denny's PBA Dress Code.

Wonder if Pool Players all were required to adhere to a simple DRESS CODE if more corporate sponsors would support pool.

I suggest a beginning would be as follows:

MEN

Clean, and Non Wrinkled Shirt with Collar, Long, or Short Sleeved, and no VULGAR WORDS, SLOGANS, OR LOGOS attached to Shirts. If Shirt had Tails the Tails to be Tucked in.

Clean Trousers, Pants, Jeans, Not Worn & Torn No Shorts

Socks & Closed Towed Shores. No Bare feet, Flip flops, or Sandals.

WOMEN

Same as above

Same as above, but Women would be allowed to a Dress, or Skirt at or below the Knee, or Clean Trousers, Pants, Jeans, Not Worn & Torn No Shorts.

^^^ Local tournaments do not have dress codes, at least not in my area, and bowling is pretty big here. Even State tournaments don't have dress codes, although, if you all have matching shirts/pants (no jeans) you get a little pin or something for looking good. Most team sponsors are willing to purchase shirts for teams as a way of getting their name out there.

At the yearly National tournament you aren't allowed t-shirts or shorts, you need a collared shirt or matching mock collars and dress pants. Nothing saying it needs to be tucked in or wrinkle-free.

The Denny's PBA tour has actually opened up the dress code a little bit in recent years to allow players to be most individual and stand out. They still do require dress pants though.
