Break Speed App

Just a bit of info I recently came across. There's an app in the Android store, not sure if there's an iPhone version or not. It's called "Break Speed" and it's powered by Predator. It's $5 and it's pretty darn handy. I'm not a shill by any means, just like the app and wanted to share. You select the table size, where you're breaking from and hit the timer. You have 1 minute to break. It recognizes the sound of when the cue ball is hit, then when it hits the rack then does the math.

I haven't calibrated it against a chronograph but it seems like it's in the ball park, we spent about an hour with 4-5 of us going back and forth using it at the pool hall a few weeks ago. Turned into a little "competition" after a while.

Here's a screen shot to give you a bit of an idea what I'm talking about.

Enjoy it if you choose to.

Did they just defrost you? =)
It's been around for years. Great app though. I bought it shortly after it came out, and took it for a spin a few times. Don't use it that often anymore. My record is 30.51 mph, keeping the CB on the table.

Sort of...for those that have known me on here over the years my playing goes in spurts. Took 19 years off, came back for 3-4, took another year or so off and I'm back again. And happily so.

Sounds like a refresher is right up your alley, later this month, when I come to Wichita, Mr. Lights...Camera...Action! LOL!

I sent you a PM about that Scott....I'm not in position for a private lesson, but I'm seeing about putting together a group one for you at South Rock Billiards. I believe you went there after you left my house when you were here last. I'll be heading over there this afternoon for a 3 ball tourney and I'll ask around for interest. Does your phone number still end in 7473? I'll give you a call with what I find out.

Good to be back around.

It is available for Iphone. I do not use it to see how fast I can hit the ball when breaking. I use it to have a consistent speed with control on every break. Most people lose control when breaking too hard.

I have had it for years. It is quite accurate.
With permission, we set it up at one of the break speed booths.
There was only .2-.3 difference between the two.
Even tested it on some older recorded matches that posted break speed, it was always less than .3 difference.

wow...felt accurate but I didn't realize it was that close...thank you sir. Good information.

The science behind the app actually should make it compeltely accurate as long as the ambient noise isn't causing false spikes..... Some phone have sound leveling built in to them which may cause issues in a noisy room... The coolest thing is you can use the app watching youtube and it works on the recorded matches.....

I have the breakrak with radar, and have compared the app, it's pretty close, but music really seems to throw it off, if you're in a quiet setting, it works good. I personally think if u gonna work on ur break, invest in the breakrak...no Mickey mousing around racking em, and resetting the phone app...for a few hundred you can just bang away over and over.

I downloaded this app the other day and for whatever reason it doesn't work properly.

I've set the table size, adjusted the CB placement for the break and start the app while it sits close to my bridge hand on the table rail.

My first break the app displayed 68.7 mph and the second time it was 59 something. Ive used it a couple times but it's way off (or maybe I'm a beast which is always possible) and not even close. But at 59 and 68 I would expect to destroy a cue or 5 breaking that hard.:D

There is no outside poise interference that that would be causing the issue either. For 5 I'm not too bummed but I would like to use the app to work on break consistency.

Any ideas as to what the issue may be?

Thanks!

Gary

It works off of the sound your phone interprets so it probably has something to do with your phone. What type of phone do you use?

StrokeAnalyzer

StrokeAnalyzer has a built in break speed feature. You have more control over background noise threshold. You can also manually place the markers to the peaks where the speed is measured. Check out all the features of StrokeAnalyzer here....

Ah I remember this app, it's been out for a while. It's actually pretty accurate.

Edit: If anyone wants this app for free for Android, PM me ;).

Shameless plug...

BTW, your software is not an "App." The OP is discussing Predator's iOS/Android application. Also, Predators app allows you to "manually place the markers to the peaks where the speed is measured."
