break tip- phenolic vs leather

My current break cue is phenolic but I'm going to leather. The phenolic certainly breaks hard but I think it slips if hit a little off center thereby negating any potential power advantage. That plus the possibility of damage (I just got a new table with a brand new set of balls) and I'm going back to leather.

tip advice

i prefer a hard lepro tip, never cared for the phenolic tip. seen many of guys miscue with a phenolic tip.

I agree with the other guys, just not much control with a phenolic. If I put a lot of power in it and I just hit a little off center, it's disasterous. I can't wait for my OB Break.

I use a phenolic tip and it hits good when I hit the center of the cue ball. Definately off center hits can be disastrous though.

That's a very interesting question. I have a J&J break/jump cue with a phenolic tip. I think it does a better job on sinking balls on the break than a regular house cue. But how would it do if I changed the tip to a hard leather tip? I'd like to see some input from someone who actually used both phenolic and leather tips on the same cue.

The new Samsara JB tip is leather, and it's so hard you'd almost think it was phenolic. It breaks & jumps fantastic & offers the good control of leather. I've replaced all of my phenolic & White Diamond tips with them. I've still got a couple X Breaker shafts w/ the original G10 tips on them - but I'm not using them, and they're more forgiving than phenolic, too.
I don't think you can gain anything from phenolic tips at this point but an increased chance to fail.

I make a Series of Break Cues (Series I, Series II & now Series III) once in awhile. I like the Tiger hard leather tips. The Series III turned out so well, one of my customers even uses the cue to play with. It is a 13.4 shaft & has a tremendous hit, all because of the superior Tiger tip.....

I have a J&J Spark Break that I replaced the phenolic tip with a wizard hard and have never looked back. Much more control with only a very slight reduction in power. The cue didn't have a one piece tip/ferrule but instead had the glue on phenolic tip so it was very easy for me to replace (one of the reasons I picked this one so I could switch if I decided I didn't like phenolic).

Samsara it is

Thank you so much. It sounds like I can have my cake (hardness) & eat it too (control)

I have been using a phenolic tip, however, I saw on the BCA website that at nationals and other BCA sanctioned events, you can't use them to break with anymore. You can still use a jump with a phenolic tip but not to break with. Just a FYI...

white diamond or samsara. i've been using a white diamond with a buffalo horn ferrule. That buff horn is hard as hell. I tried out a Samsara tip with a canvas phenolic ferrule and it was badd ass.

I just bought a Kaiser jump/break with a phenolic tip and a J&J jump/break with a hard leather tip. Both break and jump great so far but I've only used them a few times. I'll get some more playing time in the upcoming week though.
