Break tip shape

I ordered and finally received a new jump/break cue last night. I had a white diamond tip installed with hopes of it staying attached. When I unpacked it, I noticed it had been shaped to what looks a dime radius.

I've never had a break tip shaped like this, so it brings me to the question of shapes for break tips. I'm not sure that a dime radius is the best for a break tip. Could it be because it's both a break and a jump cue that the radius is as such?

I believe a flatter shape would work marginally better for jumping. I have heard that a dime radius produces *slightly* lower cueball squirt, the opposite of what you want for jumping.

As for breaking, my personal experience is that a dime shape on a *phenolic* tip provides a different feel to the hit. I swear I get more of a sensation of compression and "pop". So from a purely power perspective, I like the dime radius. However, from a cueball control perspective, a flatter tip seems to produce a bit less spin on the cueball. This could be for other reasons though. For example, I might get away with an off center hit on the cueball more with the dime shape without miscueing, so it may just be an illusion that it produces more spin. The flatter tip may simply miscue more easily, so I don't get to see the huge spin. I use a nickel shape on my BK2 and that seems to provide a nice balance.

Hope it helps,

Next time you want a break cue or pool cue, just drive around 25 miles south to my house. I can make any cue into a break cue.

And if you come on a Saturday, there will be sprint car racing in my front yard.

Flatter than a nickel. Quarter? Yes, maybe a bit flatter even. You need to control the cue ball. Center cue ball to center OB. Boom.

Maybe others like it different but I find this works best for me.

For what it's worth, My break cue with phenolic is a dime radius. My jump cue ( James Hanshew) is a nickel radius. That is the way it came from Hanshew. I am very happy the radius set up I have on both of those cues.

I also keep my play cue at a dime radius, shaft is at 12.6

I must be the one of the only leather tipper-for-breaker user...
I usually do a nickle shaping about once a month on mine and perforate it too. After about 10-15 breaks it settles to about a quarter and I run that for the next few weeks.
I've tried the phenolic (sp?) tips and found for my style I can't control whitey as much as I like. I play 9 ball on bar boxes and 8 ball 10 ball on 9 footers and find it suits me fine. When playing 14.1 I use my Falcon cue since the break isn't as brutal. :)

Flat

SPENT LAST WED. NIGHT WITH NICK VARNER WHO HAPPENED TO BE IN TOWN.HE PLAYED CHALLENGE GAMES SOLD SOME CUES AND HAD FUN WITH THE LEAGUEPLAYERS. ONE YOUNG PLAYER BELIEVED HIM TOO OLD TO PLAY ON THAT TIGHT DIAMOND BARBOX. CHEAP $100 LESSON ON SAFTIES. GETTING TO BREAKING NICK HAD A BREAKCUE WITH A 13.5 SHAFT ALMOST FLAT TIP. I REMEMBERED Larry Hubbart playing with 14mm shaft completely flat tip . he said how great he controlled whitey hitting dead center80% speed. thats hitting cue ball square and objectball square. i used to have a 30on. cue 14mm . i might go back .

My current break cue is a Schon STL-1 EB,stock shaft and tip.

I've been shaping mine in what is actually a small section of a 1 1/8 radius for years.

This is exactly half of a 2 1/4 circle, same size as a normal cue ball. Technically, this referred to as a chord.

It's not quite flat, but close. I feel that it not only minimizes unwanted spin,it imparts more speed to the cue ball.

When I break the balls as well as I can,the chalk mark on the cue ball is the full width of my tip. Tommy D.

Thanks for all the replies. I wasn't entirely happy with the nickel radius that was on it, so last night I reshaped the tip and got it to a quarter radius.

I didn't try breaking with it after reshaping. I was pretty surprised on how easy it was to jump, and pretty accurately jump at that. I didn't get a chance to do any breaking with it, that'll be tonights adventure.

poolguy4u, what equipment do you use to make these break cues? Do you use a homemade contraption or something that is premade by one of the reputable people on this site?

Home made contraption?

Premade by one of the reputable people on this site?

:scratchhead:

Are you kidding me?
This is more funny than making wine out of water!

Can you name on reputable person on this site?:lmao:

I have my own contraption called a lathe and use all my own raw materials like phenolic, G-10, and some unknown prehistoric material that is over 30 years old and no one else in the world has. I only make the tips and I use shafts already made or I can make a shaft out of a blank from...one of the reputable dealers not on this forum.

Plus I have over 100 pool cues in my wood pile.

Pool cues for sale and cats are free.:grin-square:

I meant no disrespect. I read in another thread that you had made something lathe-like for doing tips, cleanings, etc. It's something I'd like to do, but having just moved, would only be able to piece things together to have something workable. It's also great to have someone that has the ability to make cues local.

I won't tell my wife that the cats are free. Her and the kids have been wanting one for awhile now
