Just listened to ABR and the part from TD Jay Helfert. I just wanna go on record to say that yes, little old me suggested breaking from the head spot. So... If it happens I can finally say that one of my good ideas for pool was finally used in a recognized event. Lol
I posted about it in a thread Jay had about this years us open. If I might be so bold as to make a few suggestions for any future 9ball events. I would say...
1) Do away w the stick on spots. I have never understood the point of having it on the table? It comes unglued, creates a spot on the table that's uneven, and yeah.... Just mark it with a sharpie or some other type of ink that doesn't come off when the balls roll over it.
2) Use a template (magic rack). It ensures a tight rack so as long as u have a matching set of balls. Put the rack down prior to the event and mark where the holes are to let the players know where to place it. In the event that a ball is stuck on the rack which is usually on the spot where the hole is you can just pick up the ball and replace it where u have originally marked the template.
Although I have these points. I still stand firm on the fact that I believe 9 ball should be a predictable break bc it's just the physics of the diamond rack that you are going to have wired balls on the break. I see nothing wrong with breaking and running big packages.
Pools about being consistent. No one complains 14.1 when the guy keeps doing the same thing over and over. 1 pocket it's the same thing over and over. 3 cushion same opening shot time and time again. So why can't we accept 9 ball to be a game where multiple packages is like having a high run?
Or if you want to go the other route... Use the traditional rack but use a defensive break shot since you have no idea if ur gonna make a ball or not. With ur opponent racking using a triangle it's not guaranteed ur gonna make a ball so why gamble.?
Ok I'm done ranting for now... Lol good luck to this years US Open players.
