Breaking with your player cue.........

For a couple years now I have been breaking with my Searing cue. I'm talking about power 9-ball breaks. Please correct me if I'm mistaken, but I seem to remember an old Accustats video of Varner. The play by play guys were observing that Nick was not using a break cue, but breaking with his player cue. They said that Nick was of the opinion that since the break was the most important shot of the game, why not use your best cue. I know there are many reasons to use a break cue....save the wear and tear on your main cue, avoid flattening the tip, ect.

I break SO MUCH BETTER with the Searing, that I cannot stop using it. This is a cue that I could sell for thousands. With the exotic tips out now, there is very little flattening or mushrooming. Still, my inner voice tells me I'm nuts.

STOP me for gods sake!!!!

Can someone point me to a break cue that can perform like my Searing??

A break cue has a really hard tip. It is very stiff and is weighted differently than a playing cue. For those reasons it is able to transfer more energy to the cue ball. So if it is the most important shot in pool why not use something that is specifically designed for that particular shot?

On another note if you are breaking well with a playing cue why not just keep doing it? At the end of the day you should use what you are most comfortable with.

Sure no problem on the break cue, just run out and buy another Searing! :thumbup: (don't bother thanking me!)

Several times over the years I have had to be reminded to use what works, not what others or myself thinks ought to work. I'd think seriously about a spare shaft if you don't already have one you are happy with. As far as what you break with, why try to fix what ain't broken?

I break with my Lambros because it breaks better than any break cue I've tried. It is what it is.

I always thought breaking with a cue could knock the inlays loose and may start to loosen the joint pin. I broke with a playing shaft and the metal collar screw came loose becuse the wooden threads gave way on the shaft.

That's why we don't buy cues at K-Mart. If you can hurt anything other than maybe flattening out a tip a bit by breaking with it it is not much of a cue. Break cues are built just the same in most every way that matters as far as construction goes as any other cue. I have had several "break cues" and have never liked any of them for breaking. I use a Hercules tip on my cue, so it doesn't matter if i use it break or not, they just don't flatten. Thank goodness.
