Broken pool cue

Anyone ever see a pool cue break like this? I swear it was not abused!
Ive seen a Predator snap like that from falling over on a carpeted floor. It was a Falcon made cue Labeled as 'Predator' the shocking part was that the A joint pin was within 1/8" of one side of the cue. I had Showcase do the repair on it since it was a very expensive cue. I don't think I could have lost center like that using a drill and a chisel to make a cue. With a lathe how is that even possible?
Looking at your pictures it looks like rotted wood, kind of porous and weak.

Is what we're seeing the weight bolt? If the wood was grained funny in that area and the bolt was a bit overtightened against the end of the core it was just a bomb waiting to go off.

I had a Players SP that hit well and I liked it. I let it go last year , regretted it almost immediately and was looking to replace it soon.

I ordered a Schmelke today to see what the fuss is about. 153 dollars delivered.
We'll be waiting for pics! I don't think you can beat them for the price.

I bought a Huebler break/jump cue in 1992. After the first break, it snapped between the two joints. I called the company, sent the cue in, and received a new one within a week.

I agree with Schmelke as a good cue. Dufferin would have been a good option IMO at the time. I have two in the garage that I picked up at a garage sale. Since I use an extension extensively, if the joint doesn't match up, I probably won't be using any other cue that doesn't have the same thread.

The ferrule on my Players HXT65 broke after about 6 months of regular play. No break shots and just about 5 hours per week. I really liked the cue when I first started using it but that will be my last players purchase.

That handle wood looks rotten. I would have tried to talk to someone higher up the chain about getting a replacement or refund. Then sell it and/or buy a Schmelke. (y)

"cheap" is relative to everyone. $200 may seem chump change to you. To a minimum wage worker it's a week of work.
You know minimum wage is now about $15 an hour and most of them places are paying $17-20 an hour. $200 is chump change even to a minimum wage worker now.

Players Cues are made from 100% North American Grade A Hard Rock Maple.
Very poor quality in the piece of wood. The wood selector for the day that cue was built was sleeping on the job.
The break shows signs and characteristics of a spalted (rotten) piece of wood. A healthy piece of wood very rarely would exhibit a clean, straight across break that is shown in the picture.
The bolt did not break. It broke at the end of the bolt cavity which further weakened the dowel with an improper construction design.
