Buddy - Can Play One Pocket!

OldHasBeen

Tom Ferry
Looks like my buddy, (BUDDY) can still play.
Last time we spoke, he said that One-Pocket was on his agenda because of the pace.
Well apparently he has taken some of his natural (9-Ball) ability and applied it to his One-Pocket game. He just beat Greg Sullivan, Tony Chohan, Alishan, Matchin, Kang, & Jose Parica to win the Hard Times One-Pocket tourney.
The best part of Buddy's game has always been Cue Ball control. So I guess it make perfect sense that he is going to excel at One-Pocket. I think that Cue Ball control is VERY important in 9-Ball, but even more so in One Pocket.

"WAY TO GO" - BUDDY!

TY & GL

Ps. - It does my heart good to see a mature, generously proportioned, previous Champ come back and win again!

Maybe I'm misreading your post, Tom, but Buddy Hall has been well known as one of the best and most knowledgeable one-pocket player for many years. He even wrote a one-pocket monthly column for one of the magazines.

Your right Fred - But.............

Your 100% correct about Buddy's playing of One-Pocket -
BUT - MY MEMORY - of Buddy goes back quite a bit - to the 70's.
9 Ball was his best game & HE WAS THE BEST.

TY & GL

Ps. From now on - When I say "recently"
Please keep in mind - I may be referring to the "80's & '90's.

My (Buddy) too, Tom. Couldn't agree more.

Fred, I believe what Tom is refering to is that when Buddy was without a doubt the best 9 ball player on earth he was getting 9 to 7 from Grady playing one pocket and not liking it. Buddy has truly dedicated himself to the game of one pocket the last 10-15 years and it shows.

It is refreshing to us elder +/- 300 pounders to see one of our own do so well. And, just for the record, when Grady was giving Buddy 9-7 it was the mid 70s. Just might be able to turn that spot around today.

Buddy Hall and Eddie Taylor

From what I have been told Buddy learned alot of what he knows about one pocket from one of the games all time great players. Buddy spent alot of time with Eddie Taylor and even lived in Shreveport for a time. I also heard that Buddy is living in New Orleans and is giving everyone a 10/2 spot in one pocket but still no one will play him.

LOL. This clarifies a lot and puts things into perspective for us, the younger generation of ballbangers :)

Your Right - I was there.

I was lucky enough to be "On The Road" and in Shreveport when Eddie Taylor & his lovely wife lived there.
While I was there, I was able to go with Jersey Red & Eddie Taylor to a Morrison’s Cafeteria for lunch. As I have said before - It was one of the best conversations (about pool) I have ever listened to. The stories & games went on forever. We were there for over 3 hours and I don't think I said 3 or 4 sentences & they were questions.
This is Why I can say (unequivocally) that Buddy played the BEST 9-Ball in the history of pool. It isn't just my humble opinion, but the honest opinion of BOTH - Red & Eddie. They both agreed that Buddy was playing the game better than either one had ever seen it played.
I'LL NEVER FORGET THOSE STATEMENTS - COMING FROM 2 OF THE GREATEST PLAYERS THAT HAVE EVER LIVED.

Grady on Buddy Hall

Grady Matthews once played a legendary match with Buddy in Shreveport. Grady claims that he was playing some of the best pool of his life and still lost. Grady said that this particular match was one that he was proud of eventhough he ended up losing.

The other posters are right to doubt the size of the spot that Buddy has been giving. It also sounded rediculous to me at the time; I am only repeating what I heard. But think about it, there is maybe only one other player in the world that can match up with Buddy (Efren.) A player with his reputation would have to go to some extraordinary lengths to generate any action.

Pocahontas must've been at Hard Times !!!

In another wonderful forum, Chicago's own Freddy "the Beard" Bentivegna once opined that "Buddy Hall couldn't find his hole with an Indian guide"! :D

Just curious what you think constitutes the best 9-ball ever played. Buddy was obviously in dead punch at this time, and nearly every pro has a top gear where he never misses, so how can you say Buddy played the best? Can you compare Efren in dead punch against Buddy in dead punch? They both play perfect, perhaps it comes down to their ability to kick? Efren is probably the best kicker in the world, Buddy is probably pretty good too. So what makes up the best 9-ball ever played in the game's history?

You opened a can of worms here. ;) Undoubtedly, someone is going to point out that Buddy did beat Efren for the cash back when Efren first came here. However, it's only fair to point out that Efren had already been awake for days beating every other world-beater of that era who would play. I'm not saying that changed the outcome of the game but, as far as I know, that is what happened.

There is a fairly long line of people who can match up with him within a ball either way. There are more great one hole players than you are probably aware of.

I admit that my knowledge of the world of one pocket is not complete. I live in a small town and to my knowledge I am the only one pocket player around here. My knowledge of one pocket players comes from the conversations I have with people when I pass through Jamie Farrels place in New Orleans and Pickels in New Orleans. Shannon Daulton is the only other one hole player they put in Buddy's league but he recently got injured in a car accident. Who do you rank among the greatest one hole players?

One other side note I heard about Buddy. Although he is one of the greatest one hole players in the world he is a gambling addict. He has been playing alot of cards lately and word has it he is flat broke.

Uh-oh, here we go again. I think I'm out on it this time. Freddy, Dogginda9 or any of you others help your self, LOL.

Shannon is a buddy of mine. He lives about 20 miles from me. When he is playing he does play jam up one pocket. Thera are a handful who can win on any day so my decision is not to grade or out anyone. I'm not saying there are 2 in every town, but, there are a few guys out there who like their odds.

Of the well known 1-pocket players I would rank them:

1. Efren
2. Cliff Joyner
3. Shannon
4. Scott Frost
5. Jose Parica
6. Buddy Hall

Then you have a whole bunch that are close or in this class.
