I don't know if he was the best 9 ball player ever,
but everybody that ever tried to disproof it lost.
I played Buddy even 9 ball when I was 18 years old about 6-8 weeks after I won Johnston city in 1970. It was December or maybe January of 71.
Played him for 25 a game for about 3 hrs. Got him 10 games loser but he got even so I quit. Swapped 3 to 6 racks with him the whole time. Too tough of action!
Tall Jeff beat him twice in that same time span! Tall Jeff was as good of niner as I’ve seen with the exception of Lassiter.
I spoke with Tall Jeff some years back and he told me Mike Segal beat him bad playing even 9 ball. Beat Jeff that is!
Buddy was a great niner but there’s been a lot of great Niners in the last hundred years.
Every great niner can be beat on a given day especially if they run out of shells lol.
You surely don’t want to play a great player in his home pool room, not good for your bank roll. I don’t have an issue at all putting Buddy way up there with the best Niners. He’s pretty much proved he could play anybody!
He wasn’t the best all around player of his time he was just about the toughest niner of his time for ten years or so but that’s pretty dam impressive!
There’s no greatest player of all time, only during their hey day. Buddy wasn’t top ten Arguably at other games such as one hole, 14-1, 3 cushion.
Lassiter was the dominate niner in the 60’s into the very early 70’s along with 14-1. But wasn’t top ten among one holers in my opinion. But yes Buddy was about as tough of action as you could get back in the day, my hats off to him!
