Buddy Hall

great commentary by Varner and Daveport as well.

I'm happy there is some high quality video of Hall playing near peak form. He was so solid at the table- great stance and very little unnecessary body movement.

What happened to Tang Hoa after this tournament? Haven't heard much about him in recent decades.
Poker became his thing. He still a plays a little from what i've heard.

Buddy probably won more tournaments than any pool player ever dead or alive. Many dont know for a fact that he won many short stop tournaments as well.

I backed Tang in that U.S. Open. When the smoke cleared we walked away with 18.5K! Tang does quite well playing poker in L.A. He's stacked up good these days. Rarely plays pool, or needs to.

I don't know if he was the best 9 ball player ever,
but everybody that ever tried to disproof it lost.
I played Buddy even 9 ball when I was 18 years old about 6-8 weeks after I won Johnston city in 1970. It was December or maybe January of 71.

Played him for 25 a game for about 3 hrs. Got him 10 games loser but he got even so I quit. Swapped 3 to 6 racks with him the whole time. Too tough of action!

Tall Jeff beat him twice in that same time span! Tall Jeff was as good of niner as I’ve seen with the exception of Lassiter.

I spoke with Tall Jeff some years back and he told me Mike Segal beat him bad playing even 9 ball. Beat Jeff that is!

Buddy was a great niner but there’s been a lot of great Niners in the last hundred years.

Every great niner can be beat on a given day especially if they run out of shells lol.

You surely don’t want to play a great player in his home pool room, not good for your bank roll. I don’t have an issue at all putting Buddy way up there with the best Niners. He’s pretty much proved he could play anybody!

He wasn’t the best all around player of his time he was just about the toughest niner of his time for ten years or so but that’s pretty dam impressive!

There’s no greatest player of all time, only during their hey day. Buddy wasn’t top ten Arguably at other games such as one hole, 14-1, 3 cushion.

Lassiter was the dominate niner in the 60’s into the very early 70’s along with 14-1. But wasn’t top ten among one holers in my opinion. But yes Buddy was about as tough of action as you could get back in the day, my hats off to him!

we all get old and feeble at some point. that's life. but we can if taking care of ourselves can extend that point many years in the future. unless some bad break gets you.

pool players, especially in the past are notorious about drugs, smoking and weight. not many of those lasted past early old age.
no reason not to be healthy and active well into your 80's and longer.

hope things go well for him the rest of his days. he deserves the best for his accomplishments.
My friend Chris Wilmeth drove 10 hours to interview him a few days ago. The interview is on YouTube. It's called the poolin around show. He is in a nursing home right now but was just in there for rehab. Not doing his rehab though. He was supposed to go and play a few games of pool with Chris the next day but fell down and broke his back that night and was unable of course to play the next day. I hope he gets well but he is very much overweight right now and overall health not good at all

Watch the interview on YouTube of him. He says Lassiter was the best during his heyday. Too bad buddy is in real bad shape right now. He was supposed to go play pool with my friend Chris Wilmeth the next day but he fell down that night and broke his back. The interview is on YouTube. Search for the poolin around show.

Mother Nature can spot you the rainbow but your still gonna lose. Hope his last years and happy and pain free. That’s all we can hope for
Unfortunately they are not. He was just interviewed by my friend Chris wilmoth and was supposed to go play pool with him the next day. He's in a nursing home and he fell down that night and was unable to go with him the next day. You can watch the interview on YouTube. It's called the poolin around show

Since then I just watched that documentary and he was in it a lot. Hard to see him like that but it’s life I guess

A little confused. Is there a more recent interview because the only one I can find is a year old, linked below?

That’s quite a compliment to Wimpy, who was already in his 50s by that time, yet Buddy still claimed he was the best even at that age.

He tried to get me to pitch quarters with him when I met him in Florida. I told him no freaking way.
I hope he's ok.

Buddy always stuck up for Wimpy……but Wimpy said Buddy was the best….it was a mutual admiration thing.
