The only names I know are Boy Bicol, Jun Qapio, and Ramon Brobio, but I didnt think they came to the States. Who am I missing, Steve?Nope. He’s an older Filipino.
I’m not giving up the name now. This looks like a great trivia question. The only names I know are Boy Bicol, Jun Qapio, and Ramon Brobio, but I didnt think they came to the States. Who am I missing, Steve?
Manuel FloresI’m not giving up the name now. This looks like a great trivia question.
He's been talked about on here at different times over the years.
He never came to the States and he’s older than Parica.
Pretty sure Helfert may come up with the name and if he can’t he knows where to find out.
EDIT: oops, I saw you mentioned ‘Boy Bicol’. There’s always mix ups on his name, people have said a couple of other names were Boy Bicol and they’ve even confused his brother as being Boy Bicol.
The best way to know is if anyone named ‘Boy Bicol’ was playing after he was killed…it’s not him.
So now I guess the trivia might be his real name.
The head rail is the Artie Bordendorfer move as well, works so good. “Just stay where you are at” Artie told me while he dismantled my dreams of winning, I just stayed there shot after shot glued to the cushion every time. The squeeze…..He was in Tulsa back around '07-ish and he played all comers 1p for 5bux/game. That little sob left me FROZE on the head rail FIVE straight shots. He just grinned, it was awesome. His touch around the stack was just stupidly good.

A great find!
Friends, here is a great find from a buddy of mine, Mr. Bal Verbo, who got it from Amang's FB account! And I kid you not! From left: Danny Tamayo (Games and Amusement Board); Efren Bata Reyes aka The Magician; Rodolfo Luat aka Boy Samson, Jorge Dacer aka Totoy Dacer, Luis Tabuena...forums.azbilliards.com

AnitoKid did a fantastic historical write-up.

23, but what’s a couple of sets…
But, new internet posters don’t want to believe it. Buddy was always a favorite over Efren in 9-ball.
Buddy and I played in the same pool room in Paducah, Kentucky. I asked him several questions over the years.
1.) He laughed when I asked him his high run in straight pool, he said maybe 50 as he never played it.
2.) The most he ever made was $100K in one year in Tulsa. I was sure that it would have been in Shreveport as there were lots of stories of him playing there.
3.) I asked him about Bill Cardona playing 9 ball and he said there was time that Billy was tops or just as tough as anyone. Pretty rare that a pool player saying good things about another player.
4.) As noted in thread, he said Wimpy was the best 9 baller he ever saw.
5.) He said it didnt make a difference how big the spot was if they never got to shoot. Pretty ballsy thing to say.
IMO, the reason he as so damn good was his INCREDIBLE cue ball control. He never had to shoot a tough shot.
Secondly, while everyone talks about his 9 ball skills, but his bank pool game was awe inspiring. Its sad that nobody mentions it.
Ken
jose came first.
all the top players beat each other at times under whatever conditions. few lost though on their home courts. that's where buddy played or at ones he was familiar with.
but for his time he was the best 9 ball player in the world. but the best was just a small amount better than the 2nd best.
lassiter as mentioned was the best for maybe the longest time and he won where ever he went. that's a big difference.
jose came to the us and played dan louie on a neutral court. i was there and had a bet on dan. which he won. then jose wouldnt play anymore.
so who beat who when and where means little in the scheme of things.

Is he the one pictured in the Grisham book? You nailed it, Boy Bicol was the greatest of them all according to the old time Pinoy players.
Luat came to the States quite often. He used to hit the balls so cleanly. Came in Runner-Up to Niels at the DCC 9-ball in 2007. He won a couple of US pro tour events in the 90's and was a member of the Filipino team for World Team Billiards , who won the whole event. World Team Billiards was he inspiration for today's Mosconi Cup.jay, what about luat. in the 80's when they first started coming over some of parica's backers told me he was the best of all of them. but as we know people rarely get it right as they have favorites.
he did win lots of big tournaments against all the pino's and was an elder to them . i dont think he ever came over. but kind of remember he might have mentored efrin some.
