Build a champion in a month or 2. Is this possible?

We were both pretty wore out. Zack from no sleep and me from just being me. Diabetic and 60.

Zack was at this point that no player should be at. he had absolutely no thing left in the tank.

As he was playing he was just going through the motions. The effort was sporatic at best. The heart was there but the mind and body were not.

His young eyes were now bloodshot and all the bounce in his step was gone. It's hard when a player is at this point to say uncle but as you get more seasoning and have been through it for years it's easier to pull up the horses and play another day.

If your losing you can quit and if your ahead you can quit. You can always continue this contest tomorrow or the next day.

And when I tell a player that I need to quit myself it's also about health. I could have a stroke or a heat attack being diabetes. There is no pool game in the world worth that.

if the player puts up a big stink or even tries to get tough i tell them lets post up some money and come back tomorrow night.

It will take Zack a day or two to recover from this meaningless matchup.

he again was drinking those darn energy drinks that he thinks help him play. That spike in your mind is only temporary. I need to convince him somehow that they serve no benefit at all.

For myself I'm hoping I'm done with this lung thing and the smoke. I couldn't breath for about 3 hours when layed down to sleep. it was like I had sand in my lungs and a tickle that forced me to cough.

It kind of scared me because it just kept on and kept on. I had to sleep.

I hope there is nothing permanent going on with my lungs. Only time will tell. But for now I will stay away from any and all cigerrette smoke.

that is what created this problem in my lungs and hopefully being out of the second hand smoke will cure it.

For Zack and myself it's back to having some fun. Only there won't be much action for Zack today. he has another lesson to learn. It's called the day after play on no sleep drinking energy drinks and depleting your body to the point of being total exausted.

you need to recover for a day. I know at 23 you don't think so and feel pretty invincible but being through this many time in my life i know better.

I call it getting grounded. getting your mind level again and your body back in a good functioning manner.

It will be tough for him I know and maybe I'll still have him play but it's back to the cheaper sets for a day or 2.

Tonight I will step up to the plate. That's the nice thing about having us both there.

And I have been getting some nice offers to play.

2 men a van and the road..............

if you are on the road and 23 years old you should be able
to play most days on 5 hours of sleep.

Excitement overides the brain and common sense.....

Sounds like it's time to come home!

Here's what happens.

Young guy gets up and plays all day with not enough sleep. And plays until 6:00 AM in the morning.

Then gets some sleep but he was so beat that the brain and body didn't still feel right, kind of like jet lag. Most of us have been there.

This is a bad time to make decisions, especially when you just played again for another 12 hours.

No, I'm not giving up on Zach. He has visions of winning this tournament with this team. They also have the singles events over there also. 8 ball and 9 ball.

I've been to some of these events where there is $15,000 added and it is split up by 20 divisions. Teams and mens and womens singles also. In the masters division every match is tough and there might only be 20 or they might put the masters and AA in the same division and give the AA players a couple of games on the wire. Tough again.

This just isn't for me at the moment.

Who knows, Zach might win everything but I doubt it with not enough sleep and exhausted to start out.

I've seen this kid play on 5 hours of sleep or less. He might play good for an hour but then goes in the tank. I can see it from the outside but it's hard for the player to see this sometimes.

I like to be rested or i don't like to play. I like my money rested.

No matter how old it is. Rested money is smart money.

Need to get to the poolhall and see what's happening.

One man a van and the road for now..........

I don't like the should........

if you are on the road and 23 years old you should be able
to play most days on 5 hours of sleep.

This kid has allot of energy but I can tell you when the tank is too low for a few days solid you better recharge your energy with some good rest.

Might start out good but it's tough if you get into another long battle and the road is full of long battles....

And Chris, i know you've been there. No fun to play too tired.

Especially if your betting a wad.........

Lack of sleep is an excuse! The road isn't interested in what is making you play bad tonight! Just go out and do it!

Do you want the money or not? If you want the money, find a way to win! Do you think you will find someone that will just hand it to you?

This is the manner in which Zach should be taught.

All the champions I know.........

Hi there Chris, I appreciate you participation in the thread.

All the champions I know hit the bed as soon as they can. As soon as their done with their match it's adios.

If they get in the losers bracket they are in trouble because they just can't play at that high level they need to.

I know some players and even champions that rely on some type of drug that allows them to play for days.

My man hasn't and won't fall into that trap at least while he is with me.

That's a one way trip to disaster in life.

Zach is already a champion person and I don't ever want him to lose that. The drugs can rob you of that a piece at a time until there is nothing left but a shell.

I want to keep the champion person and just get him playing great pool all the time. Championship pool. It can be done and we're already real close.

Lots of work to do but this kid is worth it.

He's way ahead of any other 23 year old that I know already.

Thanks again.........

Don't know......

What Kind of cue?

Don't know and really don't care. I have 20 cues and need to sell a few of those. Unless this is a cue that Zack wants to play with he should have gotten the cash.

All I heard was custom as Zach was packing while I was sleeping at around noon to head to Davenport. .

I'm sure it's worth $300 but you still have to find someone to buy it.

And who knows. it might be worth $1000.

But Mike is sharper than that. If it's worth more than $300 he ain't givin it up.

Maybe Zach can sell it in Davenport?

I'm even debating heading over there to help these kids win this tourny. First is $5,000 and I'm in dead stroke.

Tough part is I got action here that I really like and the room is paid for until Monday. I could win up to $1000 with no extra expences.

If go to Davenport and I'm sure the room is $70 to $90 a day at this radison . Stuck $300 to $400 in expences before I hit a ball.

Tough call. I'll have to see how I feel after tonight.

Sometimes I feel like a dog chasing his tail but this is the nature of the road.

We will get there after the first of the year for sure...

Gene bring the crew to Indianapolis. Plenty of action at Brickyard and no smoking.

The plan is to pick up Zack in Appleton after the 5th and head south. The colder it is the faster we will get there and I think it will be cold.

I like the no smoke there. We will be sticking to the no smoking rooms.

I need to go to a doc soon. My lungs are in trouble. If i got too much trouble we might not be going anywhere.

Did an online question and answer on lung cancer like I did for sleep apnea and found out I had sleep apnea.

From the symptoms I have the the site says I have an 80% chance of having lung cancer.

I don't have insurance so I'm going to give it another week before I see a doc. Hopefully I just need to let mother nature clean out the smog.

See ya in January........

Im with 1on1 on this one Geno, if you get a chance to swing by the Brickyard it would be great to see you again!

Hope all is going well my friend, its been a while.

If you watch most pros play they don't have any type of conversation going on. Their focus is totally on what they are doing.

I watch Zach talking to someone and getting up and shooting without doing what he needs to do to make the shot and get the shape he needs.

Any break from a routine that works very well is disaster when we shoot a shot. Especially in a pressure situation.

If your mind is someplace else it isn't focused on the task at hand.

I've watched this kid play now for about a month on the road.

When he sticks to business and focuses on the game he plays pretty good.

When he is in the conversation mode between turns he gets up and just doesn't get it done more often.

In the poolhall there are many distractions. But the biggest one you can totally avoid is yourself.

Cut this one out and your already way ahead of the game.

Geno I think that really depends on the player....

Have you asked Zach about what he is battling on the inside when he matches up?

The speech center of the brain is also the part of the brain that runs the voice some of of us hear inside of our heads...

I play way better bantering than I play sitting down and being silent UNLESS I have a rehearsed internal dialogue I can use... In a short race or tourney match the script can be enough but in a long session... I don't think so....

Sounds like if he is socializing he is dumping some stress... If that's the case just telling him to stfu may be a bad thing and not a good thing unless you can give him another way to deal....

Chris

What, is Zach preparing to become the Princess of Pool? What does it matter if he likes the taste? He is crossing the country to make money, not live the life of Lindsay Lohan.

Each day he ends up losing money, he doesn't get to eat for the next 24 hours. Now you will start seeing some improvements. Withdrawal headaches? How can you ever expect him to succeed if he is bothered by every slight pain of the body? If you continue on this path he will always have an excuse! Oh, I was a little tired. My drink didn't taste good enough. I was too hungry. The road isn't interested in your excuses!

Chris you're kind of brutal man. Sounds like you're on the kung-fu method of getting better and tougher which is to say you have to endure pain and hardship....

There are a few books out there on what it takes to become great and while desire is a key factor it's not the overriding one. The overriding one is deep practice. Desire is what separates the really great from the just great. Desire is what makes them work harder than others in their field. But just to be in the field requires a certain amount of foundation and structured practice.

This is what Gene is trying to teach Zach I think. The way I see it this is not a throw the kid in the pool and swim or drown type deal. This is an incremental lesson in how to think deeper about all the choices one faces while trying to make a living as a traveling pool player.

I don't know if Gene's methods and thinking is all correct but I enjoy the running blog of his thoughts about the choices being made and what he sees as the consequences. The interesting part will be to see what happens in the coming month. Has Zach learned the lessons, is he ready to be more disciplined in his approach? Will he pace himself better?

It's all a learning process even for me.........

We never stop learning but over my lifetime of being on the road there are certain things that are just the way they are. If you make the same move you get the same result. If the result was not so good you should avoid making that move again.

I knew that going over to Davenport was a stone cold loser for me or for Zach.

He rode over there to play in the singles tourny. he's out already. No sleep and when I called him tonight he was sleeping in someones car. He was supposed to be staying at someones apartment but he has no car so he is at the mercy of whoever is driving.

Plus on top of that he has to recover his energy after not sleeping for a whole night sleeping wherever he can. He sounded pretty whipped when I talked to him.

He's 23 and had to see this for himself. Lesson learned the hard way. School of hard knocks is sometimes the best.

The team part of the tourny over there starts tomorrow. 2 of the players will never catch up on their sleep.Zach and Mike. Jimmy took off tonight for Davenport.

i think they got 26 teams and they are going to handicap it. This might be a good thing. I hope the boys do good so our bankroll doesn't slip backwards.

When Zack gets back on Sunday or monday we will have to take a couple of days and just practice, eat well and rest up.

I know i say this but we will probably be right down at the poolhall again.

I will be rested and have action to play already. I might play some of it tomorrow.

There never was a thought to ever give up on Zach though. This kid has allot of talent. We just need to teach him how to harness and keep his energy up and be ready everyday.

Like the basketball players in the NBA. They do it everyday. With one day off here and another there.

I look at it this way. I'll have a little bit smarter 23 year old pool player when he gets back.

School of hard knocks is the best teacher sometimes.

The DCT is saying.......Zaaaccchhhhhhh

Indy is on the way East =) I think Derby is trying to steer you there.....

I'm pretty sure that we will be there. Never know what can happen before that but chances are pretty good.

It would be a good place to see where Zach is at.

I've never been there and now that it is no smoking there is no issue that way.

See ya there Chris....and everyone else.

Just like the rest of the sweaters in this thread, I have been enjoying the detail in which Gene Albrecht of Perfect Aim is sharing his trip on the road.

This is an INCREDIBLE opportunity for any of you that wonder what it is like on the road. I know Gene and he speaks the truth about his journey. Personally speaking if I was trying to make a living on the road, I would probably not put everything out there like Gene is doing. I wouldn't lie, I just would share all of the intimate details about how he and Zach are doing. Regardless, this is an awesome pool diary that Gene is sharing with us.

Chris Banks comes from the school of "suck it up and play". I'm not sure what your age is Chris but there's a time for suck it up and a time for pack it in. The smart money will always be on the pack it in mentality (when it is time).

I can't begin to tell you how many times I have seen champions, playing on their second or third day only to see them go busted. That's not smart. It's just plain stupid, even if they are using stimulants to do so.

As to Zack: The main thing that will carry Zack long after Gene leaves his presence is "DISCIPLINE". Of all the characteristics and things that Zack needs to learn, discipline is at the top of the list. With discipline Zack will be able to climb many mountains. Without some serious self-discipline, he will fall down the mountain so many times, he will become disenchanted with this journey that he will either go bad or just plain quit.

The Marine Corps teaches discipline but it takes an initial 13 weeks to set your mind right so that you can continue the journey from there. I'm sure there are other ways to develop self-discipline but by listening to those who have been there and done that (successfully) you can shorten your learning curve.

I see it in my local pool room all of the time. Young guns, hell-bent on being the best that they can be. Full of enthusiasm, talen and youth. The lack of self-discipline raises it's ugly head and they take some severe beatings. Most of the time, it leaves them bruised and humiliated but they have youth on their side so they live to fight another day, just minus some important dough that they would have had if they had been disciplined enough to do the SMART THINGS. Instead, now that they are minus that important dough that they earned, they now have to depend upon the "kindness" of their "friends" who will be taking a part of their winnings from there on. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with forming a corporation or letting a buddy go in with you (every now and then) on some action but if you're going to be successful long-term, you had better be able to stand on your own two feet.

Zack, if you ever read this thread, you had better re-read Gene's words and make them your mantra.

Best regards,

On the topic of "chit-chat" vs "shut up and shoot", I'm a big fan of the latter.

Chatting might reduce your nerves... but then again, so does a slow backrub from a pretty girl. Try shooting good pool while fading that kind of distraction.

Besides the potential loss of focus, and the fact that you might cross the line between "relaxed" and "casual"... there's another thing to consider.

Intimidation can play a big role in the outcome of any serious match. A quiet and serious player who shoots like he's jaded by the routine of hundred dollar racks... can really dig some screws into the opponent's brain. Having the right demeanor can really bring out the dog in your opponent.

Rather than handle nerves by acting like he's having fun, I think a player should handle it like he's bored and this is too easy.

I like that for sure........

When you are playing an opponent being quiet and focused can be very intimidating.

I kind of liken it to when you were young and you wanted to talk to this cute girl. Silence makes it pretty tough but once the ice is broken and a conversation is started it is allot easier.

Silence not only helps you focus and your right , it can be very, very intimidating and give you an edge that might help you win.

After my little pep talk with Zack he went from one game ahead to 8 ahead in a real hurry. Focus or intimidation or a combination of both it can do nothing but help you win..

Zack stopped back at the room at 3:00 PM

Zack woke me up at 3:00. He came back to the room to get his contact lens stuff and a few other things.

Don't know what time they play but the drive back ands forth and shortage of sleep can't be good.

Sounds like there wasn't a very good plan overall for this tourny.

The good news is it will be over today unless they make it to the finals if it goes until tomorrow. I hope they get there.

I got action down at the poolhall waiting for me. i just need to get ready and go get it. I'm playing pretty good again.

When Zack gets back we'll talk about what a mess this whole tourny thing was. These are usually tough enough but there need to be a structured plan by everyone to get it done.

But you never know. These young guns can all play. They might just be able to pull it off.

I am subscribed, and absolutly hooked to this thread. To be honest I would actually pay to read this! This is just too good to put down. Please keep up with this thing Gene! I hope we see you over in sioux falls some time soon!!!!!

Hopefully that kid will learn from this!!!

Thank you so much for this quality read.

My best wishes to you and Zach.

Justin
