Bugs, odors, mold and poor service are bad enough, but three times I've had people come into my room that didn't belong there. Once through the main door and twice through the adjoining room door ( and the door on MY side was locked both times)..... while I was in the room.

That is a sure-fire way to get the names. I have done that a lot when traveling to these pool tournaments.

It is helpful, though, to get a local's opinion, if you're lucky enough to know one.

I have had nightmare experiences, picking hotel names off the Internet. If I stick with Marriott, I usually am safe. Comfort Inns are hot and cold, same with the Days Inn. I'm probably just picky today, but I cannot get comfortable in some hotels, especially if there's loud noises in the hallway all night long. It's scary when you're in a strange city and don't pack a weapon.

TripAdvisor.com is actually a great resource for lodging ratings.

I stayed at a Holiday Inn in Monroe, LA one time back when I used to smoke and my room wasn't ready when I got there but I dropped off my bags in my room. The room hadn't been made up and the sheets on my bed were in disarray from the previous guest's night stay.

I like clean sheets and a nice mattress for good sleeping comfort too and when the maid wasn't looking and in the hallway, I pulled back the edge of the sheets and carefully placed a discrete twinkle of cigarette ashes in the corner of the foot of the sheets and left. That night I came back to the hotel and the room was made up nicely with no odors of any kind and I went straight to the sheets and pulled back the sheets only to find my ashes exactly where I placed them. I blew a gasket to say the least. I don't care what the excuse is, if I'm paying for a clean room, I expect clean sheets. They lost my business after that even though they hurried to provide new clean sheets.

BetMore.com states that the "Betmore Delicatessen, Motel, and Poolroom" is the finest place in Indy to stay. It's about 10 minutes right off I-70, and it's about halfway to Olathe, KS if you guys are going. Though the price is reasonable ( $0 per night including food ), the management may try to make you play pool......it could really throw off Keith's game, so I'm not sure it's a wise move.

P.S. - I can almost guarantee the sheets will be cleaned (though now that I know about your "cigarette ash trick" I can check things out).

I know exactly where you are, having driven cross-country last year!

Olathe is still up in the air for us, but if we can swing it, your kind offer is very much appreciated.

Can't beat that price. I've always said there ain't no place like home, and then to be lucky enough to have a home with a great pool room in it! That's the nuts!

You probably want to avoid the Sands Inn off I-40 in Amarillo, Texas. Some friends and I stayed there during a golf tournament in the mid 80's and a hooker was killed in the parking lot, needless to say we all did not hear or see anything and being as we were 18 and 19 year old golf/pool punks we decided to take a little of our winnings and upgrade to a Holiday Inn.
