Building a backyard pool room

Don't beat yourself up

At the price quoted,I don't think you got hurt very bad. The building will outlast all of

us. I built my room a year ago or so and did all the work myself. 20x24. Bout killed

myself and didn't beat that price by a substantial amount. Mine is not anything

that I would consider over the top and I still came in around 12,000.

As far as the table, all I can do is echo what has been said. You shouldn't have

any trouble finding a used table that while it may not be as pretty as a home

table, it will definitely last longer and play much better for around half the

price.

Congrats on your new place and I hope you enjoy whatever you put in there

for years to come.

Getting tired of the echoes - as I said, I am looking for used, and have not decided on a table yet.

I have gotten some suggested mechanics in my area, the first two I tried were no-joy, but have a few more recommendations I'm going through.

I am looking at some local Gold Crowns, but they're not easy for me to find, and so far the best one I've seen has ball return, which I don't want. I welcome any help finding one. (PM me)

Not interested in Diamond - personal preference.

Don't let a ball return stop you if the table is otherwise acceptable; drop pockets are cheap enough, and your installer might trade you a good set for the ball return setup.

I just put a Gold Crown 3 in my garage. The table was under under 2500 installed with new simonis 860hr, brand new pockets etc. I worked a deal to get the sub rails extended and new superspeed. I painted the castings with hammerrite, and its good to go.

Hold out for a crown....crown......crown...... crown..... ;)

Very pretty! - Like what you did to the steel at the pockets!

BTW: Finally got in touch with a guy I think can help me - going to see him and his tables this Saturday (3 GCs, etc - rebuild guy in Sachsey).

Yep - bought myself a Gold Crown II. The guy doing the work is replacing the pockets and cushions and repainting, etc. It will have Simonis 860 cloth when set up.

My building itself has been no joy for a few weeks now - builder schedule + rain. Hope to have some progress starting next week... :frown:

You live in Dallas?
Shane Johnson lives there and is the best table mechanic in Texas. He is very good. Learned a ton from one of the best on the planet. If you need him PM me your info and I'll pass it along to him.

If that's who you already got then your in great hands.

I did try to contact Shane, but got an unidentified VM message, followed by a mailbox full message - rechecked the number from multiple listings here - no joy reaching him.

Jeffrey Sorrell's doing my table - really comfortable with him. Restoring the tables is obviously his lifestyle and I trust him to do good work.

To answer comments so far:

The overall dimensions are 18 x 26. It was going to be 18 x 30 with a bathroom, but cost just got away from me, and in the end we made the hard decision to lose the plumbing.

Cooling is by a large window-unit (and ceiling fans), heating is by a pair of oscillating ceramic floor heaters (Ft. Worth, TX) - I'm sheetrocking and using spray-foam insulation, so it should be fine.

Price?, hmmm, no reason be secretive - Slab is 4K at $8/sq, Mueller steel building was $4.4k, labor for the metal building contracted at $4/sq (1.8k), spray-foam insulation $1.2k, interior framing for sheetrock walls and 8 ft ceiling is coming in just over $3k. Beyond that, I'm using laminate planking for the flooring (700-1k), the murals I'm getting are $300 each. Please do not discuss the pricing further on this thread, I'm not really happy about my total costs!

The pool table is hard to discuss on this forum. There's nothing I can say that's not Gold Crown or ProAm that will be generally acceptable.

I am looking for used Gold Crowns and Sport Kings, but can't tell perfect from damaged in used tables. If I find one I feel really good about, I'll probably give it a chance, for better quality and less money I'll take the age - but only if I'm convinced the table is in excellent shape...

If I go for a new table, then the 9 ft Glenwood is about as much as I can afford. At $4k, I get a nice looking 9 ft Brunswick. The most I could consider spending would be $5k. The only other new table I'm considering is the Centurion. New or used, and which one, will all be a game-time decision.

You really didn't do bad on the pricing here. You will have a sound structure and a very comfortable place to play pool and enjoy yourself. Go man-cave all the way; big screen TV (Vizio is inexpensive and very good), nice music system (a Bose radio will do wonders in a small space like that - $400), a small frig for refreshments (cheap at Costco or Walmart), maybe even a microwave for cooking up a quick snack! Now you've really got it going on there. I'll stop by next time I'm in the neighborhood! :)

You don't really need a bathroom (especially with a big back yard ). If you want to save some money and still have a jam up table, look for a used Gold Crown in good condition. A really nice GCIV can be had for 2K!

Most of all ENJOY!

That project is looking great! I think the price is good to, heck just a good portable building that is 12' X 20' will cost 5 to 6 grand, so one like you have that is much bigger with the concrete foundation, insulated good for 14 grand seems like a good deal to me.

The ditches are in progress - about half depth - left is electric, right is internet, back ditch is water-flow management.

Still no vertical metal - Mon thru Fri next week is currently forecast clear, so maybe we'll finally get it done...

Nice Doghouse!

I'm thinking the little white dog inside the chain link fence in your first photo is getting excited watching his brand new dog house going up! :D

Oh, yes, they sing to me while I work - they're very excited. I think somebody showed them the pictures of dogs being allowed to play poker and shoot pool...

Just be careful with your new cloth.

Next up, framing for the sheetrock..

BTW: My pool table is now ready and waiting for me! The guy doing the restoration work just finished all his work on it and is now storing it for me unassembled.
