Butt diameter

Hello Guys,

im a converted snooker player playing 9 ball and trying to find a cue to play with of a 9 ball style (currently using a very old converted snooker cue.)

however all the 9 ball cues i play with have a huge but compared to what i play with. are all american pool cues made with the same size but, as they never mention this dimesion in the write up on the cue.

thanks for your help in advance, im looking into buying a predator sneaky pete with timber to timber join, 30'' z-2 shaft so the transition from snooker cue to pool cue isnt that great, the only hang up is the size of the butt.

ps the but on my snooker cue is 28.5mm

cheers.
steve

i like thin snooker size butts as well, they are pretty hard to find on most american production cues. i found that cuetec/scorpion have pretty thin butts on their cues. you could get a predator z fitted and matched for it. otherwise you'd probably have to go custom.

Hello Steve,
28.5mm is pretty close to 1 1/8" (or 1.125). A lot of American cues today are around 1 1/4" or 1.25 (31.75mm). Find a reputable cuemaker and you can get just about anything you want. It's good to know a cuemaker.

thanks but there are no cuemakers in brisbane that make american cues, so im having to order one from the states, and as i dont really know what i like, and i dont like most american cues, im not really going to order a hand made cue.

are there any standard cues on the market that have smaller butts?

I do have several never used Colorado cues, made by Dan Breggan. His cues had thin butts, not super thin, I will measue one. Dan no longer builds cues, but they were all made from exotic woods, very nice designs, radial pins, great hit, especially if you have the shafts tapered down a little. The points are not sharp because he did a lot of CNC work. Most of his wood came from India. I am going to sell some of them if you are interested

Thanks
Ted

i don't think any cuemakers in US make butts that skinny unless they are special ordered.yours is 1.12 and the average is about 1.25.it doesn't sound like a big difference but it feels like one in your hand.1.12 is pretty small.

So, why buy another cue if it's a Snooker cue butt that you want? Why not just buy a shaft or if need be have one made to fit your butt? That way, you'll have the butt you prefer but also the performance of a shaft made for the larger balls and type play.

Hi,
If you go to my web site (www.triplecrosscues.com) you can find one with a 1.030" diameter at the top of the grip and 1.127-1.128" diameter at the base of the grip. It is TXQ0067. It is heartwood maple with four gabon ebony points. There are handcut ebony ovals with mother of pearl flashy inlays. Let me know what you think. It may suit your needs.

dick has a good point. i know a good cuemaker in england who could make a snooker style cue but modified for pool with a bigger tip, different ferrule, maple shaft, modified taper, etc. completely to your specs for a very decent price. i'm considering having one done myself. a fully customized plain ebony butt model is only 125 pounds. i bought a snooker cue from him and i was very happy with it.

tripxq,

can you give me prices on TXQ0061 and TXQ0073?nice looking cues.also are they normal specs or close to say .840 and 1.25

Have to agree with Dick, having a shaft made is alot cheaper than a whole cue, plus the butt will be exactly the size you want.

thanks guys for your suggestions.

what if i get a shaft with a uniloc joint, can i buy a uniloc joint on its own and give it to my snooker cue maker, he will be able to make a butt then for me.

if so where can i get one??

regards.

you can buy what you need here:

I believe you probably need an installation kit which may be fairly expensive.

There are no production cues with the butt diameter you want.
It is highly unlikely<read inconceivable> they would change
a single cue to suit you.

Your problem is more common than most cuemakers think. I've done a few "hybrid" cues for UK snooker players coming over to play here in the States. Here is one example which is 55" long and 1.1 at the butt.

I'm not able to take on any more work right now but maybe this will help when talking to your cuemaker.

The cue had to be finished with linseed oil because it smelled right. I guess that's the typical finish in the UK.

You can get a predator sneaky pete and bring the butt size down, or just remove the gloss finish and just oil it.

thanks, yeah that was pretty much my plan for now, getting it with a z2 shaft 30'' for the smaller tip and going to thin the butt.

but i cant put a flat on it or take it down too much cos of the adjustable weight, but i want the adjustable weight to see what i like.

still interested in getting some uniloc joins tho......
