Hello all,

What in your opinions is the most common butt diameter? I see alot of 1.2 to 1.26 inches. Ant replies would be appreciated.

I would say the majority would be about 1.25".

As with cues getting longer over time butt diameters seem to be getting smaller. Early cues could be found near 1.50. Then they dropped to 1.375. Now many order cues around 1.25. I have seen a few recent orders asking for 1.125. I believe that with the advent of the superfast cloths, less massive cues are necessary to bunt the balls around the table. Smaller diameter means the cue is more level to the table also(slightly). This seems to give a little better control to draw shots also IMO.

My Qs have evolved from 1.300 to 1.280 to 1.260. Some people with larger hands, might still want something a little larger...JER
 
my take

I tend to like the smaller diameter butts myself somewhere in the 1.16 to 1.20 diameter. It is amazing how much difference you can feel in such a small difference in size. I guess the differences in shaft diameter can be felt just the same, for instance the difference between 12mm and 13mm shaft sizes.
I would tend to agree that most of the current cues are probably being built around the 1.25 diameter as most popular size.
 
I have been .850" joint to about a 1.250" butt for many years now. Straight cone taper.

Can you tell us why you changed from 1.30 and 1.280, to 1.260.

I personally like a smaller butt, around 1.230. This size seems to suit my hand the best.

At 1st I changed because the 1.300 was too thick, to fit into some tube cases. Then more & more customers asked for smaller sizes. Not because it was at all benificial to their game, but because they wanted it like someone else was playing with. It's a compromise...JER

My standard sizes are .845 Joint and 1.23 butt. Seems like here in Indiana they like the butts thinner than most :)

I agree with you. Normally,my joints are .842 and the very back of the butts are 1.220. The last two cues I built were specifically built, at the customers request, no larger than 1.200.

Hi Jim: Hmmmm. Yes, it did seem that the last time I was at the 500 the snakepit was full of "thin butts".

League players around here like no thicker than 1.250 for use with the regulation cue ball. However coin op tables that have the big cannon ball or the weighted ball or the magnetic cue ball, (if you wanna call that pool)
ideally need heavier artillery (1.300). That's why some full splice.. one piece bar cues will handle that equiptment pretty darn good. Generally spealking, sort of the difference between pool and snooker... where diameter and weight is concerned.
 
My standard is .850 at the joint and 1.250 at the end of the butt. I do adjust these sizes on request. Here in Hawaii we have some "BIG" boys, but many like an undersized butt. (not usually available on island girls). Altho these guys are rather large, they tend to have stubby fat fingers and like the feel of the smaller butt. (there we go again)
 
i would consider 1.25 standard form what i have seen,but i prefer 1.22-1.23.i also like skinnier joints for the dense forearms.825-830.

I think 1.250 is kinda thick too for single-taper butts.

In Texas we like "BIG BUTTS"! OHH! my bad, this is the cue forum.

I like big butt cues too. .850 to 1.280-1.300
 
Here, in maryland we like little thinner butts my standard size for my cues joint 835 butt 1.225 all my customers seem to like that feel over all.
