Have been trying Butterfly points and like them but need more detail on how to do them well. I am looking for a book or video with some tips on how to do them better. I have Chris Hightowers book and videos but am looking for some additional info. Any suggestions. Yes I know, I could take a week and go to Deickmans place in Michigan for a week but I have two furballs that I have to care for. Hey, Maybe he would let me bring them and they could hang out with his furballs. Dennis, help me out here. You are the man on butterflies.

If they are not coming out good for you, it might help to know what method you are doing them with. We could probably offer more specific advice if we knew what was wrong with the ones you have done so far. There are some very good butterfly point builders on here, so give them some details of what you think needs improvement and the ways you built them, so they can suggest solutions.

O.K. Allow me to elucidate and listen to you guys laugh.
I have a cored 13" forearm that I cut to 1.100 on the big end. I also have a set of 3 40/1000th's veneers , total 120/1000ths for gluing to the forearm.
So I cut flats on two sides forearm to 800/1000ths and glue two sides up, Total of 120+120+800 =1040. Then I trim them and repeat on other two sides.
Now I have a four sided butterfly that need to be sanded to finished 1000 size.
Does this make any damn sense to anyone?
Anyway, you can see that I am floundering.
Questions: 1) Should I be working with veneers or find some thicker stock. 2) How do I go about trying to cut for short points? Offset the tailstock? How do get them more rounded on the ends?
Or should I take up tennis and forget about cues?

Sounds like your bevels aren't severely angled enough. You need to offest the tailstock or find a way to move your taper bar to a more severe angle. And keep in mind, the rounder the butterfly gets at the top, the wider it'll be at the base & deeper it'll be set into the host wood. Go too far & you'll cross your centerline, but there's not really any need for that if you are doing the 4 fly fronts.
Take a scrap forearm and turn it to your final size. The start making the butterfly flat cuts on one side. Keep adjusting your tailstock or taper bar towards the cutter. You will quickly see how geometry effects the shape and width of the fly's. I'm going to pull a number out of my a__, but I'd say about 6 degrees. I've done several cues where the angle was the same as my normal point channels. After you've done the above, sit down and look at the forearm. Start visualizing different angles and overlaps. You will have a much better understanding of the process, not only how, but more importantly, why does this work. If you want to see the ultimate butterfly's look at Paul Fanelli's work, or Dave Barenbrugge's. He's one of mine from a few years ago before the finish went on.

FWIW there is no truth to the allegation that I build cues at this
particular point in time - I remain way too busy chasing the hot
deals on cuemaking equipment - howsomever, the cue dimension
calculator is still fully functional.
