I like to do butterfly points but feel I need some tips on how to do them better than I do now. Anybody know of where I can find some videos on butterfly cues. I have the Hightower videos and Joe B's stuff but neither covers buttterflys in any detail. Prefer to work from round stock on the router and I do ok but not like some of the stuff I've seen on this site.
Any thoughts?

I forgot to say that I use Chris Hightower's deluxe lathe and I am kinda stupid when it comes to special jigs etc as seen in a recent posting.
Do I need to use my band saw in order to progress further?

BHQ is the man here.... look at his cues... he could write the book. If he offers advice.... take it.

The late Paul Fanelli was a expert.... check out his cues that he made.

You might not want to hear this but .....As always.........the best method is to experiment and try things. Band saw, lathe, table saw, miter saw, router.

You will learn the questions to ask .... there is a long slow learning curve.

If you want to do butterlies on round blanks, it really is just as simple as cutting the flats on the sides and gluing on the pieces, just like shown in the Advanced Volume One DVD. You can do recut butterlies and so on, but it is all just cutting flats at angles.

A straight router bit cutting from the side should work fine on a cue
lathe with a tapering template.

It's all just noodling out what angle you need to cut the sides to.

Now don't you wish you had paid attention in Trigonometry?

I been thinking about this a lot (smell the wood burning0 and have decided at this point to stick to cutting the flats on the Deluxe much deeper than I have been doing and see how that works.
I'm only 75 so I have have a lot of time to develop my skills. Except I don't buy green bananas any more in case I don't live long enough to eat them.

Man, your'e on top on the AZ communication skills as well. I don't even know what a pm is yet.
Yeah, we did talk awile back (great memory) and I have stumbled along and as silly as it sounds a lot of guys like my rudimentary efforts. Thank God the cues hit well. Basic construction is good but the devil (and a higher price) is in the details. As I said in last posting I'm going deep on my next forearm. I actually may be getting a clue on how to at least widen the points. How to double up and maybe have them go in two directions has yet to enter my brain.
If I knew how to send you a photo of one of the cues for grins I would do that. You will at least get a chuckle from them.

O.K. I think I've figured out how to attach a photo.
I have one finished cue with fairly large points but edges are not sharp nor clean. Also a photo of a cue in progresss but points are not wide enough nor are they sharp on the edges. Is this normal?
Go easy. Remember I'm an old rookie at this.

you might want to try going deeper at the back end
a steeper angle means wider fuller tips of the bflys
