Buying a new Table

I want to replace a piece-of-junk $300 table from Sports Authority with a Slate table. A neighbor wants to get rid of a 8' American Heritage table for $500 (no cloth). I'd like to hire someone to level it and felt it with Simonis. How much do you think that would cost? Do you think this is a good deal?

I suggest posting this in the Talk to a Mechanic forum, if you haven't already. You'll get some informed estimates from those guys. I'd guess that a ballpark figure would be $500 or so--$200 for the cloth and $300 for labor, using a quality mechanic not a hack. Obviously the price would rise if you need extra work like rails rebuilt, etc.

Yous probably should note the model name for a better opinion about whether this table is a good buy.

AZB member LCCS is a mechanic in northern Illinois; I haven't used him so can't comment on his skill level, but he seems reputable based on his interactions here. You might want to pm him for a direct dialog about this. Good luck.
 
500 total to move and refelt it should be good. You might have to buy the cloth at that price, just depends. I would look on craigs list and find a valley 7 ft table, you should get one for around 500-600. would not buy an off brand table. If they don't use them in a pool hall, then I would not buy it for my home table. Just a thought. Tom
 
I talked him down to selling it for $350 and took the deal. I'll let you know if I regret it after getting some simonid on it. Thanks!

Ask on the Table Mechanics forum for someone in the Chicago area to set it up. IIRC there is at least one who is a regular there who is in that area.

Make sure the cushions are checked before the new cloth. Most American Heritage tables we see the cushions are dry rotted
 
I can honestly tell you that if you want a pool table for your home you should look into getting a table model of what you play outside the home. Look into a Diamond Pro Am, Gold Crown, Olhausen Champion, Gandy etc.

I bought a furniture style table years ago and upon putting it together I was almost immediately wishing it was a GC or Diamond. Why I did that is beyond me because I typically treat big items like that where I spend a little extra to be happy with it for a long time.

One thing I learned about pool tables is that if you buy one you may very well own it forever so spend what you need to get exactly what you want.
 
I would like to play out of my house but I don't think that's in the cards any more. In fact, for years I held off on getting a Slate table at home since I would rather shell out a little cash to go to the local pool room. But all my local pool halls have gone out of business over the last 5 or so years. Q-Time, The Green Pocket, and now Palace Billiards... all gone. The remaining pool-hall/sports-bars are a bit out of range for me now, and don't have the appeal of the old "pool only" rooms.

Oh well. Anyway, I have a professional installer coming to level and felt the table in Simonis Green 760. Can't wait! :)

Just out of curiousity what were you quoted to refelt the table?
 
Thanks for the reply. I assume that included the felt.... Just picked up a 7" for the new house and looking to get it recovered as well.

Shouldn't cost much to get a table that small recovered! :shocked:

Check out Club Billiards web site. There is a price list describing various charges. Should give you a idea of what to expect.

You won't regret it. That table is fine for home. Spend the money you saved on a first rate mechanic and set it up perfectly.
