Calcutta at GB9 Event

We will be running a Calcutta player auction at the GB9 British Grand Prix for the first time in the tours history. As far as I know this will be the first time a Calcutta has been run at any tournament in the UK.

As the draw for this event is done in advance we intend to hold the auction on completion of the double elimination stage and before the last 16 straight KO stage starts.

I know Calcutta's are used at most tournaments in the US so any advise on things to be careful of would be appreciated.

The format and rules we intend to use are as follows:

1. All of the 16 players will be displayed in ranking order based on their performance in the double elimination stage.
2. The first lot will be for a 1st Wildcard pick. The successful bidder gets to choose any player.
3. The second lot will be for a 2nd Wildcard pick. The successful bidder gets to choose any of the remaining 15 players.
4. The remaining 14 players will be auctioned off in ranking order (highest to lowest).
5. Any players failing to receive any bids will be placed in a separate lot called ‘Rest of the Field’. This lot will be auctioned off last. Players in this lot DO NOT have the option to purchase half of themselves.
6. At completion of the tournament pay-outs will be made to the successful bidders as follows: 1st place 40%, 2nd place 30%, 3rd place 15%.

All participants should note the following rules/conditions:

1. All winning bidders need to pay the auctioneer in cash as soon as the auction finishes and before start of play.
2. All players have the option to purchase half of themselves. Players wishing to do so should seek out the winning bidder (GB9 will not be involved in the administration of these arrangements).
3. Players are welcome to bid on themselves but NOT on other players in the auction.
4. If a group of friends are forming a syndicate you should appoint a spokesperson to act as a sole bidder in the auction.
5. All bets are void if the highest bid in the auction is higher than 40% of the total pot size.

Thanks.

Guess it's early in the morning. At first, this looked like an announcement that the GB9 was going to have an event IN Calcutta.

But seriously, I would not disallow the contestant players from making purchases in the Calcutta. Yes, I know it can bring some ethical matters into play, but you'll raise quite a bit more money by letting players bid on each other and, in my view, it's worth the trouble. Remember that players can bid using a friend if they wish, so you can't realistically remove them from the process.

Good luck with the event.

So now the Euro's are going to gamble, as it seems they're always talking about how we gamble over here, LOL. :wink:

Very smart move GB9. It's an easy way to pump up the purses. Sponsers are getting harder and harder to get for pool tournaments. I'm sure that your tour has strict rules in place for players doing business. Good luck with calcutta's. Johnnyt

WOW! You have it nailed down. I especially like your #5. The advertisement of ranking is something I am very curious as to how it will affect your Calcutta bidding. Might suggest this for the Calcuttas on this side of the pond.

One other thing that you might mention, in order to cut down on the consternation that might arise, is that the player must approach the Calcutta buyer before he plays his first match.

BRITISH = AMERICA
WildCard = Blind Bid
Syndicate = Corporation
